Best DI and 2D settings for 898c SI?
« on: February 08, 2011, 04:30:27 PM »
What settings do you find the best for your Humminbird DI unit? I got the SI settings dialed in pretty good but my DI needs some TLC. It doesn't show hardly anything compared to the SI. I think I need to crank my sensitivity way up. Also, what settings do yall normally use for the 2D sonar (200/83khz, 200 only, 83 only, sensitivity, noise, etc..)

Once I get the DI and 2D settings correct.. I ought to be good to go.

DG00....what depth do you normally run the sonar in?.....Depth plays a lot on the DI image. Below 40 to 50 feet it gets kinds of nondescript....

The deepest depth on the lake I fish is about 50 feet, but I am usually fishing less than 20 feet of water. Normally around 10-15 feet deep. It just seems like I can't see anything on the DI. I can see all sorts of fish and structure on Si but not Di. I think my sensitivity needs to go way up on DI.

I think I set the sensitivity on 10 or 12.....the water depths of 20 feet are generally good but below 40 and on down it does not do as well...
Every time I run this stuff I end up playing with setting for about 1/2 hour.
On the attached picture above the new target is supposed to be standing timbers that are 15 to 20 feet from  bottom to top..

I ran several (12 or so) over this area and never did get a good display of the trees.  Side scan (MST towed fish at 15 feet did real well, but that is what MST is supposed to do...Side imagining is different.  Which is why guys here build towfish..

PS I did not hear any fish whistleing on these scans..... ;D... :D... ;)

DoubleGobble00,

The best way I know to work on your settings is to make a recording then play it back.  The biggest change will be when you change the DI Width.  Narrow, Med, Wide.

See what happens with this and if your images improve.

Robert pegged it.  Wide is where it's at.  Sensitivity varies with depth.  Deeper equals more sensitivity,  Shallower equals less sensitivity.

Here is a 150ft DI shot of some standing timber that gives off a 3D effect..

Thanks for the info fellas and nice pic T Mike...

I have never done a video recording. So what you are saying is, you can record a video, then take it home and adjust the settings (wide, narrow, medium, sensitivity, 455khz, 800 khz, etc) to give you the best picture quality? Then just set your SI to those settings? If that is correct, that is amazing... I will have to record something this weekend.

DoubleG.  Love that name (I turkey hunt).

You don't even have to do a recording but yeah it will work with a recording.  Here is a tip to help you with ALL of your settings. When you find a cool pic.  Bunch of fish or whatever.  Hit your arrow keys and your cursor will pop up and freeze the screen.  Now hit menu and start playing with all the different settings and it will change as you implement them.  This is one of the better ways to learn what settings do what and on a frozen screen so that you can compare and contrast.  Works for sonar, di, si etc etc.

Yeah man.. Turkey hunting is my passion. Kind of clashes with fishing but it is hard to beat a good turkey hunt. I picked that name up after reading "Double Gobble - Reflections of a Turkey Hunter" by Bobby Dale. It was a great book.

Thanks for the info... I think that will help BIG time. I am curious to what some of the other settings do, so now I can experiment while on the water. I will give that a try. Glad it works for all types (si, di, 2d, etc.). I have been trying to get rid of some surface clutter on the 2D but it made the bottom soft when I decreased surface clutter. Now I can try to get just the right balance while on the water. Great great great idea...
