New SI trandcuer for 1197
« on: January 18, 2011, 02:45:51 PM »
I just installed my 1197 on the bow of my boat and the transducer on my MinnKota. After getting the entire cable zip tied to the motor I remved the protective plastic sheet from the bottom of the transducer and there are glue or plastic ridges near the front and one toward the rear. It appears to be ecxess glue or adhesive used during the manufacturing process. I am not sure if this will affect the acoustic path and responde with some type of artifact in the image?? I tryied to remove the globs and strings of glue/plastic with my finger nail but they seem to be attached really firm to the outside surface. Anyone else have this issue with a new SI transducer.

Take a picture for us if you can.  It should not be this way.  The transducers are assembled by hand then set in a mold that holds the plastic shell and cable together so it can filled with a special epoxy.  Sounds like yours may have come apart slightly.

It may not affect the transducer at all, but send us some picts so we can see whats up.  Greg can certainly let you know if it is acceptable.

Good Luck,

These transducers are hand poured, so it may be just a little ‘professional overflow’ that you are seeing.  The folks that make these are supposed to screen these out and clean them up, if possible, but may have missed this one.  If this is what it is than there will be no problem.  Pictures would help determine what it is though.

I had the same issue back in Feb '10...(and posted my concern as well)

I cannot tell that the "glue overflow" affects the unit's operation at all...

Hello,
I have attached a picture of the transducer, as received from Humminbird. I can see any voids in the plastic caseing (lens) but the globs and strings of glue or plastic are a bit concerning to me. Any thoughts on what effcts these imperfections may have on the acoustic image?

As I stated in my post to this thread on 1-22-11...I cannot tell that the glue overflow affects the unit's operation at all...

Mine was actually worse than your picture shows...it works fine...

Mine also had more scratches than your picture shows....but it still works fine..

It should not affect it.  It would be different if you had some air bubbles in the epoxy.  Also, it is really not covering the SI elements at all.  Not the prettiest epoxy job, but it will be fine.
