Humminbird GPS NMEA Sentence
« on: October 26, 2010, 11:54:47 PM »
The  GPS NMEA output from the pigtail has a sentence structure starting with $IN  for integrated navigation device.  This must come from the head unit or there would not be a depth sentence.  Will the standalone GPS  antenna receiver output  $GP  NMEA  sentences if it is used  for other applications rather than  NMEA input to a humminbird  headunit.

Yes it will.
If you have one of the older GR16 or GR50 GPS Receivers (or a GRHA), you can get the $GP NMEA sentences by splicing into the cable coming from the GPS Receiver before it gets to the head unit (Green wire for NMEA Output and Bare or Black wire for NMEA Ground).
If you have one of the newer GR16 or GR50 GPS Receivers; the Green wire has been brought out to the NMEA pigtail connector (we did away with the Red wire), so you would not have to splice into the cable to get the $GP NMEA sentences.

Be aware though that the $GP NMEA sentences will not have Water Depth, Water Temperature nor the APB (Autopilot Sentence B), BWR (Bearing and Distance to Waypoint aka: Rhumb Line), or RMB (Recommended Minimum Navigation Information) NMEA sentences either.  On the plus side: the data will be outputted at 4x per second and there will not be the 1 second delay in the output of the data as there is if it goes through the head unit.

Thanks Greg

Wish humminbird would bring back the high accuracy Gps!  Is the GR50 based on the high quality u-blox  5  GPS chipset?

I can’t say what components we use for our units and accessories bobn.  I can say that the GRHA was dropped due to poor sales combined with the fact that there was not a lot of gain in accuracy to be had with it our standard GR50 GPS Receiver.

GR50
CEP (50%) 4.92 feet (1.5m)
95% 13.12 feet (4.0m)

GRHA
CEP (50%) 2.95 feet (0.9m)
95% 9.51 feet (2.9m)
