The AS GRP will run on an older 798ci W/ v6.300 software.
The AS HS GPS needs v 6.570 or higher so will work with the 798HD.
Both come with a 20' cable and the connector goes in the cable collector of your quick disconnect base mount.

my GPS cuts in and out (no GPS fix), instead of sending out to Humminbird and them sending back to me saying there was no problem (been reading the topics and this is what I have been seeing)... I can hook a external GPS puck to it?

You didn't specify WHICH model 798 you had, nor software version installed.

While it is possible to connect an external GPS to the 798 (as outlined by Robert above) ...you should 1st investigate possible power supply issues that could be present ...

Erratic GPS function is sometimes the first signs of low or inadequate power supply caused by possible battery problems or boat wiring issues ...

it's the unseen, unwrapped connections that may be corroded and just may cause you trouble like Rickie speaks of.

The quick detach base mounts have been known to give some erratic power issues themselves ...

You can dis-assemble the base mount and plug the cables directly into the unit to test if there are connection issues at the head unit itself ...
