I have an 899 unit and the side imaging is fantastic. The down imaging seems not to be as clear and sharp as the SI. I have the HDSI transducer after upgrading. Is the down imaging not as sharp with this transducer? or do I need an extra down imaging dedicated transducer to get the sharper readings? Thought maybe it was operator error but wanted to get someone a little more experienced to help on this topic. I have changed the settings, sensitivity etc and it doesn't seem to make much difference.

I had real trouble tuning the DI on my HB999 also. One issue was that anytime I got in water more than 15' deep the image became pretty much unusable. No amount of adjustment would help it. One of the guys on this forum suggested that I switch the DI to Narrow Beam(options are Narrow, Medium, Wide) and the difference was amazing. Now my images are very clean and getting better as I continue to master the Hb999.

That's good to know......The knee jerk recommendation for DI used to be set it to wide.

ccampbell,
What frequency are you using for the Si/Di sonar?
Have you tried the different DI Beam Width menu settings and did they help?
Can you post some screen snapshots from the DI sonar?

There is no DI beam on 899 and 999 units at all. There are only SI beams on the units which are producing DI image overlaying each other. One can change side range or depth range, but not the beams width. It will allow to stretch or to compress the DI image, but I do not think this will make it more clear. Could you please show the same screen shot at Narrow, Medium, Wide range (beam) to see the difference?
Humminbird SI are excellent units, but in my opinion they should produce DI images separately – not overlaying each other. Then they will be even more informative and realistic than dedicated DI.
