Title: 1197 temp
Post by: susieq on January 04, 2014, 10:43:21 AM
Hiya

I have an 1197 c.....recently the temp readout has been going whacky.. :-[...water temp of 80 and it reads 117.....or jumps around, but nowhere near true water temp, everything else functions correctly...any ideas?
Thanks!

The temperature sensor in the transducer is an RTD sensor.  (Resistance, Temperature, Device)
When the resistance is higher, the temperature reading is higher.

It is most likely that the higher resistance is caused by the transducer connection to the unit.....it could be a weak connection inside the transducer.

Also check the little temp button on the transducer. It might have been damaged by a bump or something. Or if the 1197/transducer  is older it might be going bad...

Actually Bob B I think the reverse is true: as the temperature increases the resistance drops (thermistor).  So if the temperature sensor is damaged or is leaking water into it than it may read some really high temperatures.  Regardless, if it is not reading the correct temperature than it is either a connection problem, damage to the transducer cable or the temperature sensor is going bad (most likely) and the transducer would need to be replaced or he could install an auxiliary temperature sensor (TG-W).

Thanks for clearing that up Greg......A thermistor resistance reading is the opposite of other RTD devices.  I always thought they were a regular RTD sensor.

Thanks everybody, I will investigate and report back...soon as the air temp goes up a bit  LOL

Turns out my transducer is leaking out black gooey stuff like roofing tar...got back to shore today...squeezed it,,,and water came out the back of it in the middle...am going to try some 5200 on it.....but will need a new one I am sure..

If it were me, I think I would just replace it .......If water has infiltrated into it, you could be risking damaging the head unit transmitter output.

Than sounds logical....I have a brand new trough the hull transducer, anybody have a new  transom mounted one they want to trade?

Thanks

susieq,
How old is the transducer?
You may want to call Humminbird’s Customer Resource folks and ask them about getting it replaced.

Thanks :) :) :) :)
