Title: 1198c SI or 1198c SI HD
Post by: danieloverly on March 23, 2013, 08:19:30 PM
I am looking at a 1198c SI, Are all of these models HD or are some non HD. I have seen them advertised both ways and when I have found them at different sites both are listed with the same model number (407990-1). So What makes a 1198 an HD model or are the two different model #'s that I am not seeing. How much better is HD than non HD? Thanks

They are one in the same!  No difference.  The HD version will have the new precision gps, whereas, if you find an older one it may have the gr50.

So I see 3 models out there  (AS GPS HS) (and AS GRP) and (AS GR50) so which one are HD ??

I believe the GRP replaces the GR50 model, and the HS has the heading sensor for slow trollers and drifters. The HS puck has an arrow that needs to point to the front of the boat after installation.

The "HD" moniker question frequently arises with user's misconception that an "HD" model unit is going to give better images...(understandable because "HD" in TV monitors usually means better picture quality)...

HB has used the "HD" moniker in the past only to denote certain hardware changes in new model units...

*..."HD" in a 500 series HB unit denotes nothing
*..."HD" in a 700 series HB unit denotes "Ethernet compatable"
*..."HD" in a 800 or 900 series unit denotes "LED" backlit screen
*...There is no "HD" moniker in any 1100 series unit
*...There is no "HD" moniker in any of the HB GPS antennas

The AS GRP replaces the AS GR50 for the new unit models coming out
The AS GPS HS is an upgrade accessory GPS antenna with a builtin heading sensor...

I have been inundated with questions about "What is HD?"

"Definition of High Definition

High Definition is largely a fluid term, taking the shape of a lot of different containers, with the only real meaning being something with a significantly increased picture quality and clarity based on the resolution of the monitor in question. For this reason, High Definition is, in reality, a synonym for high resolution.

High resolution means more pixels in your screen." From About.com

This is not bashing product by any means but to show a comparison of Pixel which equals resolution which equals HD. HD is more a buzz word in electronics and not an actual industry measurement or fact.

Comparison...
5" Screens:
798c - 640v x 640h............HDS-5 - 480v x 480h
Square Screen..................Square Screen

7" Screens:
898c - 480v x 800h...........HDS-7 - 480v x 800h
Rectangular.....................Square Screen

8" Screen:
998c - 480v x 800h..........HDS-8 - 600v x 800h
Rectangular.....................Square Screen

10.4" Screen:
1197c - 600v x 800h........HDS-10 - 600v x 800h
Square Screen................Square Screen

The 7" and 8" Screens are not easy to compare because of the screen physical dimension are not the the same rectangular inches versus square inches. But the 10.4" is the same resolution and size. But look at the 5" Humminbird is clearly more HD because it has more pixels....

The higher the pixels the better target separation and displaying fine data can be seen on the screen. For 2D and Down Imaging Sonar Vertical Pixels is very important because each pixel can represent less are of the water scanned. For Side Imaging Horizontal pixels is more important because each pixel can represent less area.

Here's an example of pixels I like to use. If you have 120 vertical pixels and covering 100 foot each pixel represents 12" of water. 100' x 12" = 1200" of water so each pixels represents 10". If you go to a 240 vertical pixel screen each pixel represents 5" of water. 480 pixels 2.5" of water and 640v pixels 1.875" of water.

This is why Pixels are an important part of seeing fine details like separating baitfish, small limbs on trees, etc.

Well that BPS employee must have been full of prunes when he swore to me that there is a difference between the 1198c si and 1198 HD c si. He said that you need to send the non-HD model back to Humminbird to get a hardware update for free.

This took me by surprise and I quizzed him some more about the 1198 using questions I already knew the answer to.  He seemed to know his stuff.  I still believe that he is wrong but he said he was sure he was right...    Things that make you go hmmmmmm...

This was my reply when I contacted HB with the question.

Dear Mr. Overly,
Thank you for contacting Humminbird. We appreciate your interest in our products. In response to your question on how to determine whether or not your unit is an HD model or not. The  1198 is not made as an hd version there is not an 1198C SI HD  we only have one 1198 which has an HD display with the Led Backlighting. If the unit has HD it will be stated with the unit model .Your unit is the 1198 C SI  Combo.
