Advice Please
« on: October 25, 2010, 08:51:28 PM »
I wanted to see if I can get a possible solution to a problem I am having with my 798 before I contact HB.  Once the water began really heating up during the summer I started to get a lot of clutter on my SI view.  The clutter is much worse on the right side than it is on the left side, and I can't seem to figure out why.  I don't think it is trolling motor interference because I wasn't having this problem in the spring when the water temps were much cooler.  Any advice on what this could be?  Here's some snapshots I took with the SI sensitivity way up so you can get the full effect of what I am talking about.

Thanks for any solutions in advance.

Kind of a dumb question, but have you tried different speeds on your trolling motor? Like the slowest speed possible? Or even tried just dropping the trolling motor in the water without turning it on. Letting the current move you or maybe using a paddle to glide you along. Obviously for troubleshooting purposes.

I know where I fish in the heat of the summer...water temps can be up to 89 degrees easy...and I never saw anything like that. My transducer is mounted on the back of my boat however.
Go get em!

Basically, when the water heats up you get more suspended material and organisms in the water, and it shows up on the SI units like this.  However, it should be equal on both sides.

A few things to check:

Make sure the transducer connector is tight.  You may even want to slightly (very gently) bend the pins out just a little to make it snug.

Is the transducer tilted slightly up on the right side?  If so, level it out.  You may be seeing more suspended material near the surface if the transducer is angled.

Do you have a friend or someone also with a SI unit you can hook your unit up on their boat?  It may be the transdcuer itself.  If you see the same thing on their setup, then its probably the head unit.  If you don't see it, then its the transducer.

If it is the head unit, it may be as simple as reinstalling the firmware/software.  You would have to backdate the firmware to a previous version first, the reinstall the current version.  Remember to follow all the steps correctly before and after each install.

Good Luck, and let me know if that helps.
