Title: Trolling motor interference
Post by: SaminVa. on February 07, 2011, 06:06:23 AM
Hi all, new to the forum here & new to the 798... I just installed the unit on my boat yesterday AM & had an opportunity to try it out. It awesome to say the least....
As per Wayne P.'s  recommendation I'm using the transom mount 'ducer to learn the unit, but here's the deal...
I wired the power to my unit to 1 of the 2 batteries in the front which power my foot controlled MK 74# variable speed .. when TM speed set on 10-thru 80 or so I get the cloudy effect when in SI mode... when on 100% power it doesn't show up.   I am using the power cord that has the choke built in to it... is there an easy fix or do I need a separate battery to get rid of the interference? Thanks, Sam

Hey Sam,
I've always heard that it is best to have your sonar on a separate battery with nothing else hooked to it.
But, that isn't always possible due to weight and space restrictions.

You could try this.
Even though your sonar is sharing one of the trolling motor batteries, try and route your sonar wires so that they are not physically close to the trolling motor wires.  If you have an instance where the wires must touch or come really close to each other, then it's best that they cross each other at right angles (90 degrees), and not run parallel to each other.

Good luck.

Sam,
If what ITGEEK said does not help, than call the Humminbird Customer Resource folks at 1-800-633-1468 and let them know about the trolling motor interference.  They should have the latest suggestions on how to fix it.

What is the cost of the interference kit cost?

I think these are about $0,000,000 each.
Is that about right SaminVa.?

Greg, quick question regarding the interference kit.  I had called a couple of weeks ago and was told the kits would not be available until the 4th, any word on that?  Between the interference and the Interlink problems, I am getting wore out.

Thanks.

That could be right E5Zero.  This time of year we are building all we can to fill orders and the accessories fall behind somewhat.  So it may be that long before they are scheduled to be built.

Thanks Greg, it is not something that is a show stopper for sure.  In fact I am trying the 997 on sonar and DI only for a while, but have a button set for SI.

Sure appreciate you guys dedication to service.  See ya.

I was told the cost was 0.   I have also rewired the 798 to one of the batteries in the back that operates the rear trolling motor...basically, the interference is gone....curious to see if it'll come back when I switch the transducer to the front trolling motor.

I have tried my unit with thepower source wires. hooked up in the back batteries & all is well. I need to get the transducer shield & saver for the large HD ducer for the trolling motor.... I have taken lots of snapshots... will eventually get around to getting them on the board.  Having too much fun fishing & looking now. Thanks for your help. Sam

Sigler,
It depends on what unit you have, how old it is and what other Humminbird units and accessories are on your boat.  This was a change made sometime after the first of the year on this.  I found out about this in a meeting Wednesday.
