SI transducer- help with location
« on: March 17, 2015, 06:33:47 AM »
I am planning the installation of my first SI unit (999) on a G3 HP 170 and would like some opinions on where I should install the transducer on my transom.

The DI transducer I removed was on the port side and it would be the easiest place for me to put the SI transducer but according to the instructions it should probably go on the starboard side. The placement of the livewell intake and bunks are also limiting my options.  Any help would be appreciated.   Thanks.

Welcome to the Humminbird Side imaging Forums ifishmo2.

Port or starboard side really doesn’t make a difference on a boat with an outboard motor unless you run in reverse a lot.  That is mainly for inboards with propellers forwards of the transom, so that they will not push aerated water across the transducer.

With the location of the trailer bunks, the DI transducer location may be your best bet.  You won’t know if the livewell intakes will block any Si sonar until you get it all installed and test it.  Set the SI Range menu to 20 feet and look for a constant line that runs parallel to the center zero line as that is how it may show up.

Greg, thanks for the explanation on the placement and for such a prompt response.  I am adding a 3/4" thick transducer mounting plate,  which will hopefully help the SI sonar clear the livewell intake.

That will ifishmo2 but will also push it farther back into the area that is blocked by the motor's lower unit, so you may have to trim up your motor a little more.
