Host Public web site Waypoint Data?
« on: August 11, 2011, 09:18:49 AM »
What do you guys think about this:
I have been converting waypoints for Humminbird Customers for a few years now.  Now I don’t share anyone’s personal waypoint data [if you are interested in purchasing this call 1-800-BR549 ;D ] but I see no reason why I could not provide the converted data from public web sites like the Alabama DNR and other state wildlife agencies.  The data would be posted for download as a *.gpx file.  The only problem I see is that the data is not always accurate to begin with but Robert could come up with the disclaimer “use at your own risk, no claim to accuracy” statement in the new download section that this would need.

So wadda’ ya say?

Can't believe there have been no responses to this yet.

I think that would be a great service Greg.  I have some files that someone in Oklahoma had converted and posted.  Having such a starter file when traveling to an unfamiliar lake would be a great starting point.

Hi Greg,

Would this apply internationally or only in US?
No big deal if it does not ...just a question

Greg,
Just waypoints or also routes and tracks? Maybe add a quick set of instructions on how to open them in Google Earth?

Robert,
Would it feasible to link them to a map similar to the member map pins ~ for visual reference?

Cool beans,
Darrell

Absolutely.  Just takes a little code manipulation.

I haven’t been converting tracks and routes but I guess that it could be done if someone wants to share them.  U.S. or International would not matter.  I’m thinking that the area on the site would need to be spilt up by locations.  First you would go to a country folder then within that there would be state/province folders and then by Lake or River.  Lakes and Rivers that al bordered by more than one state/providence would need to be placed in whichever folder most of the waypoints are located in or by whichever one the submitter calls home.

United States > Alabama > Walter F. George Impoundment (Lake Eufaula)
Australia > Queensland . Blue Lake

OK Greg, do you have some files we can start with?

Should we create a master file and append as users post their own waypoints?

It sounds like a great idea Greg.
Especially if someone is fishing new waters.

Robert,
Yes I have some files already and someone has even me e-mailed me a file to post as well.

Not sure what would be the best way to set this up other than by folders for State or Body of Water.  Let’s not forget the International folks as well, so that would mean a Country folder to begin with?  I dunno, been real busy at work so have not had time to think this through or send any files to you yet…
