« on: May 18, 2014, 12:58:58 PM »
Hi,

On the self test the unit says that the GPS is not connected. I brought it to a technichian and he said may be a software Update fix it. But as i cannot register i cannot get a Software Update. is there any option that you can send me the file email.

Welcome to the Humminbird Side Imaging Forums Max.

Call the Humminbird Customer resource folks to get the registration figured out.

If you just want the software for the Matrix 97 I can send it to you.  The last version released for the Matrix 97 was 4.750.  If your unit is already running this version it will not load again unless you first load an older version and then the 4.750 version again.

I don’t know that loading a new version of software will help though and would encourage you to do some trouble shooting before loading any software.  If you can find someone else that has a Humminbird unit that is also using an GR16 GPS Receiver, you can try cross-testing with them.  This does not have to be another Matrix 97 unit as we made many models that use the same power cable and GR-16 GPS Receiver.  You will know it is a GR16 GPS Receiver due to the dark gray gasket between the upper and lower housings and the printing on top will read: “GPS ACCESSORY SYSTEM” under “HUMMINBIRD”.

You should also take the black plastic cap off the second cable that comes out of the connector for the GPS Receiver.  This is the NMEA pigtail wire.  Once you remove the black plastic cap separate the three wires and test the unit again.  If it starts working it means that the wires were shorted.  Either way, cut/trim and seal the wires back so that they do not short out.

Still it always says GPS not connected on the selftest, either with the new GPS or the old one.
Another idea ?

Max,
Is there any way that you can remove the black plastic cap off the NMEA pigtail and check for 12 volts in between the Red and Black wires?
You are testing this outside so the GPS Receiver can get the signals from the GPS satellites, right?

Max,
Does your old GPS Receiver have the red wire?

It looks like on one of your pictures that you cut the main GPS cable.  Did you cut the main cable to the GPS Receiver?

Max,
If the wire colors on the older GPS Receiver are Black, Green and White than it was not the original GPS that we shipped with the Matrix 97 units and will make troubleshooting more difficult.  What I was trying to get you to do is confirm that there was voltage going to the GPS Receiver which can be done by checking for 12 volts between the Red and Black pigtail wires.  The newer GPS Receiver cables do not have the Red wire, so it cannot be checked there.  However, if you have already cut the main GPS Cable (the one that runs from the connector to the actual GPS Receiver) you can still check between the Red and Black wires of that cable for the 12 volts.  Otherwise there is nothing else you can check or test as you said there are no other Humminbirds in the area.

Guess I was trying to post at the same time you were Max.
Connect up the old GPS Receiver and test between the Red and Black wires in the main cable (not the pigtail) for 12 volts.  I’m actually hoping that it is not there.

Okay Max, that was sort of what I was hoping for although it does mean that the voltage circuitry for the accessories (your GPS Receiver) has been damaged,  A way around this is to power the GPS Receiver externally by wiring into a +12 volt and ground source on the boat.  The +12-volts goes to the Red wire and the Ground goes to the Black wire.  the Red wire between the connector and the point that you splice in the +12-volts needs to be cut so it does not feed into the unit, the Ground/Black wire should connect to both the unit and GPS Receiver.  I would install a power switch and fuse (1-Amp is large enough) in line with the 12 volt connection.  I hope that you understand the connections here.  If you did, this should provide power to the GPS Receiver which will start sending the data to the Matrix 97 unit.  Not pretty but it’s a possible way to get your GPS up and running.  Otherwise you would have to send your Matrix 97 in to be serviced (if we still can) and it won’t be cheap to do so (you may be better off buying a new unit at that point).

Hello Greg,

latest update, Unit works again, it was not elcetricty problem with the cables. Our Tech changed the PINS
in the unit where you connect the GPS cable and perfect.
I think it was corrosion due to saltwater.
See ya
