Title: Bathy contours on chart
Post by: erniel29 on August 21, 2011, 12:35:06 PM
I'm considering buying an 1198 SI. I understand that the unit can record/log the depth information, but can that recorded depth info be stored and displayed on the chart? I live in an area which has no channel markers, and the charts don't accurately depict actual depths, so "Local Knowledge" is the only way to navigate. I would like to survey the area in question with my dinghy and be able to then display the resulting contours on the chart.

Thanks
Ernie

Ernie,

As of right now, the answer is no.  DrDepth offers mappings features like this, but HB does not allow you to import your own charts.

It has been requested for a while and who knows, it may be in the works.  It would certainly be a nice feature.

Good Luck,

Robert

I don't necessarily want to import my own chart, just record the depths on the existing chart.

Here's a back-alley way to do it:
You could select different waypoint symbols of the different depths you're interested in
(5, 10, 15, 20, 25, etc).  Each depth will have a different waypoint symbol.

Make your sonar recording(s).
Then, as you're playing back the recordings, freeze the frame and press the mark button
for each depth you want to save.  I guess it would be best to place the cursor at the
lake/river bottom before pressing mark. The initial waypoint symbol is a blue circle.
Make sure you write down each waypoint number and the depth every time you press
the mark button.  It will display the number of the new waypoint on the screen for a second.

Then, after reviewing and closing out the recording, go back to each waypoint and edit it and change the symbol.

Those waypoints will show up on your chart.

I know it's raw, but it's better than nothing.

Good Luck.

Thanks. I purchased Dr Depth and that should do what I need by generating GPX files and then importing them.
