the settings I were using was the same on all the photos.
beam-200
Imaging frequency-455
chart speed-1
clear mode
surface clutter-5
Zoom width-wide
455khz sensitivity+2
Depth source-auto
Connected transducer- DI 200/455

I dont feel like I have something quite right by my sonar returns. Maybe I am wrong and this is what I should be expecting. Thats why I am here to ask people with more knowledge on the subject. Thanks for your time.

My suggestion is to increase your boat speed to 2-4 mph. Match chart speed to boat speed.
I think 0.1 and 0.2 mph is to slow for a good image even with a chart speed of 1.

Thanks mike. Do my other settings seem like they should be ok? Should I try adjusting anything else?

theflatlander

I can't help with other settings as I'm not familiar with the DI units.
I based my speed recommendation on my experience with the SI units.

I understand what's happening in every one of your screen shots.

The ability interpret is a practiced thing. Myself (just me - not speaking for anyone else) I would turn down the sensitivity in the 2D shots a little.

You have bottom structure, brush or small trees, bait fish, larger fish, and a thermocline.

You are also in what I consider shallower water and that is the reason for reducing the sensitivity. But it is a personal thing.

Here is a shallow shot of a baitball hiding in a depression (with the sensitivity turned down.) notice the speed.

I take lots of screen shots and experiment with settings.

The circumstances also dictate my settings. If I'm searching for certain types of fish - when I find them I turn it down a little so I don't see the thermocline. What works for me doesn't necessarily work for others, sometimes I want to see the baitfish - sometimes I don't want all the clutter.

Practice - and practice some more.

These guys are giving you good advice theflatlander.  Menu settings on units is a personal thing.  Me, I would probably decrease the 2D sonar sensitivity in most of those screen snapshots yet increase the DI Sensitivity.  I also like the original color pallet for the 2D sonar but then that’s what I cut my teeth on too.
