Title: I just ordered a 999ci hd Si...question about how Si works
Post by: BrokeLoser on February 12, 2015, 01:13:41 AM
My new unit should reach me early next week so I'm trying to educate myself beforehand. I've watched a few videos and learned a lot but there is one thing I haven't seen discussed.
Here goes...my 999 will see 240 out off either side of my boat; if I see a school of fish out to the side how will I know how far out to the side the school is?

Thanks

The SI has the option of turning on/off Range Lines so you can tell how far an object is from the boat.  You can also move your cursor over the object and Mark it making it very easy to actually find when you decide to investigate.

480 ft of total lateral coverage is a whole lot of underwater acreage to squeeze into a little bitty depth finder screen ...

The more acreage you see ...the smaller the targets become in the SI image ...

You will get a lot better target identification by keeping the SI Range to less than 100ft to each side ...and even better target identification at 3-4 times the water depth ...

Just to add : You should be able to see a school of fish or baitfish when your range is wide, if that benefits finding your fish just mark the school with a way point and head in that direction. To look at something in detail follow Rickie's post. Bob

Same here, new to the 999. After watching the videos on line, I am going to reset my SI distance to around 100' as suggested.

I use SI Range at about 100 when I'm in new water looking for new structure ...

I use SI Range at 50-70 when I'm in familiar water to make structure look bigger in the SI image ...

Sometimes I even have SI Range to 30-40 if I'm looking for individual fish echoes (especially individual fish echoes on beds) ...

Sometimes when I am looking for a creek channel path or other major structure I will set the SI very wide to look around......I don't normally go beyond 200'.....but you can.
