No Quadrabeam view after 6.570 Download
« on: January 06, 2013, 06:46:12 PM »
Hi Guys, I recently downloaded 6.570 to my 858 and now the Quadrabeam view does not appear. I restored defaults and did the download exactly how I've done the previous versions, but out on the water when I was re customizing my settings, when I selected Quadrabeam on the transducer option, I still didn't have the view added to the list of views. I've never had any issues in the past with software upgrades so I'm a bit confused to what has happened. Any suggestions will be greatly appreciated. Mark

Go back to v6.49. I installed v6.57 on my 1198/998 and it made them useless. There are issues on other boards  concerning this topic,as well. If you don't have the v6.49 for the 858 anymore, then call Hbird and they will email it to u.....or maybe someone on here has it.

Thanks Roddrsp, I only just recently deleted all the old downloads, so if anyone out there can send me 6.49 i would be most greatful ,otherwise I'll email Humminbird either in the states or Australia to send me one. It's interesting that this version is causing some headaches as all the others have worked fine so far. Mark

Yes, all the updates prior, I have not had a problem with. However, this one screwed up my SI/DI/2d. The SI was scrolling at 10 or faster speeds even though it was on 3, and the 2d was not synced and way slower. It was a mess, my SI was just a blur...

Stumpy,
Was the QuadraBeam View not listed in under the Views menu tab or was it just not in the View rotation when you used the VIEW (or EXIT) button?

Although it should have done so automatically, I would perform a “Restore Defaults” and see if it comes back or not.

roddrsp,
I don’t want to highjack Stumpy’s post here but did you actually use your 998 and 1198 units or just look at them in the simulator mode?

I updated both units then hit the water for 10 hours. I realized idling out something was wrong and spent most of the day trying to figure out why but couldn't....in addition to the problems listed below, my 2d wasn't able to pick up a barn if I drove over it... I drove over many known structure and wasn't picking up any detail on the 2d.....if you haven't found a 6.49, one of the other threads, pm Troy, he was able to send me a link to download it....I also emailed humminbird but it took a few days before they emailed a link to download....

Hi Greg, the quadrabeam option was still available, but when I selected it on the set up it would not appear in my list of views. I also contacted you guys (Matt) and he advised me that I cant reverse the upgrade as it may damage my unit if I put the previous version back in. Your thoughts??? Mark

Try resetting your unit using the Restore Defaults menu Stumpy and try it on the water (or on your boat) again.  I tried the “Quad Beam” setting in the Connected Transducer menu with a 998c Si unit and it showed okay (for sonar readings in my office that is).
Just to make sure that you were looking for the correct View, it is called the “Side Beam View”.

Seriously..... :o This is the first time I have seen this on any of the forums..... :P If that is so then why would anyone trust ANY update HB put out? We all would be taking the chance that an update would mess things up and be stuck there....... ???

Sure am glad that 6.57 is only on my computer and was never put on my 998.....

You can reverse an upgrade up to, and including the
version that came with your unit.  But nothing older
than the version that came with your unit.

Greg has said previously, that because of unit hardware changes,
an upgrade that is too old, may actually damage your system, because
the old upgrade was designed for older hardware.
It could cause newer hardware to malfunction.

This makes sense however from the post I quoted it sounds like Stumpy was told that the most recent upgrade could not be reversed....  :P

Why would someone from HB tell someone that ?

Yes there is the possibility that there was a misunderstanding on what Stumpy was told..... But until that is verified ...... how can anyone trust ANY update coming down the pike?

We have installed upgrade and then gone backlevel on several occasions without any problems.
HB may not suggest going backwards because it is difficult to get downlevel code from them.
One of the reasons Robert put the download section in this forum....

This is beginning to be clear as mud.... :P

I guess we need to get Humminbird's official position on this because it is an important point.

If the official position is that we cannot/should not go back to a previous version of firmware... then it makes it unwise to do ANY update while a unit is under warranty, because if the update causes problems then we are stuck.

Going Back to a previous version possibly VOIDS the warranty under those conditions.

Humminbird customer service folks are just people (like us), who sometimes make
mistakes.  I think Stumpy was told incorrect information in this particular case.

On the Humminbird website, they only make available to us, the very newest version
of software for our units (for registerd units only).

Humminbird recommends that we always update with the newest
version, because if someone sends a unit in for repair, and
it doesn't have the newest software version on it, they will
automatically install it.

Most of the software updates are fine, but sometimes, an update will
cause problems.  Humminbird is well aware of this, and we all hope
that they are working on better testing of updates.

Sometimes when a unit has problems, Humminbird will suggest going to
an earlier version of the software (but you will have to find that older software
version on your own).  Some people keep older versions of the software, just in case.

I don't think your warranty will be voided (Greg can confirm), if you did an update, then
something wasn't working correctly, and you re-installed the previous update on
your unit.

Remember, though, you cannot update with a version that was earlier
than what your unit came with.  I think that this could possibly be
grounds for voiding a warranty if the unit hardware was
permantly damaged by the too old/invalid update.

While I do not “officially” speak for Humminbird, I do know that there is a software version for each unit that you cannot go back beyond or it may cause the unit not to operate.  This can be a different version of software for each individual unit.  This may or may not have been what Matt referred to.

Software updates are provided free of charge and it is not mandatory that anyone make them to their units.  Anytime you are altering the software in any electronic device, there is a chance that a problem can occur.  It is no different with our products.

The Customer Resource folks would have to answer whether having a problem when re-installing a previous software version on your unit would get covered under warranty or not.  I would guess yes as long as it was not a version older than what that particular unit was originally built with.

when you purchase your unit it is a good idea to have a copy of the purchased unit code. Then for each subsequent upgrade make a copy of the upgrade. It is like any computer operation. Backup and have copies of data. This includes waypoints check point copies.
then if you have to restore our unit you will have working copies of know good data.

Is there a way to determine the firmware version to which the device went on sale? If we assume the version of the device has been updated, and the standing version of the firmware has not been detected?
I know that on the package expensive models 898,998,1198 written version installed at the factory.

Yes HB can determine that as it will be tied to the date of assembly completion on the line. Once packaged I dont think HB opens and updates. Now it depends on the showroom (dealer) as to whether they do an upgrade and that may not be known to HB. Or for folks who update their unit and do not get the code from HB.
Kind of a sticky wicket possibility.
But you ask a good question.
Would be nice if the background program in the unit kept track of the update or downgrades.
You could ask for that on the wish list..

Hi guys, this issue has certainly hit a raw nerve with some. As it turns out I did a little experimenting. First I hooked my unit up to a battery in the house and the quadrabeam miraculously appeared which I thought was weird. so then I went down to the boat and fired it up and guess what, no quadrabeam view. So then I did what Greg suggested, restored defalts and fired it once again, went to the transducer selection in sonar and the quadrabeam all of a sudden was back. Talk about gremlins in the machine. So, fingers crossed I'll try and get out on the water ASAP and hopefully all will be OK.
