Title: Making your SI portable
Post by: Takman74 on April 19, 2011, 09:48:55 AM
Hey There

I would like to use my 898SI on more than one boat. For this I have a couple of questions:

1) My unit I believe comes with an ASGR50 GPS reciever. Can I use the ASGR16 with it? If so what accuracy issues will I have?

2) Does anyone have a good source for the associated accessories for these units online.

I have purchased accessories from Just4Electronics.  Good prices but shipping rather steep, and needed a couple of follow-up calls to make sure items shipped.

If you buy from HB, do a phone order vs online.  If you buy from online, some sort of reverse auction takes place, and I have had delays with that.

I think (but not 100%sure) the GR16 will work.  But if I was buying new, I'd just get the GR50.   The GR50 will get satalite lock quicker and will be more accurate.

Yeah I figured that the ASGR50 would lock up faster on satelites than the 16 channel one. I am not sure that I need it to be that fast since the mapping software that comes stock on the unit sucks for detail. A lot of the back lakes that I have stopped on so far and would be taking this unit to won't even show up on the base map that comes with the unit. That said I probably will just get the 50 channel puck since there is not much of a price difference anyway. I just can't believe how expensive the puck, transducer are for my unit. Going to be just about 400 bucks to make it into a portable unit! OH well.... Small price to pay for such an awesome piece of technology to use on some of my favorite back water lakes!

Hey Takman  :)

NMEA 0183 (National Marine Electronics Association ) is a communication standard for marine equipment.
You need for the handheld a datacable and also the  HB PC cable.
For create a own RS232 connector: the pin 5 is ground, the pin 2 data out hadheld and the pin 3 data in handheld.
I  have use a handheld only with my EAGLE unit, so i am not sure as HB accept NMEA in, please ask Greg.
