I don't think the SD card is the problem.

Try this.  Menu>Menu
              Tab over to Views
Using the view button (upper right corner), tab until System Status- Accessory Test
The third line will be your GPS . See if it is connected or unconnected.
If unconnected, I would first check the GPS plug on the back of the unit.
The GPS, time and speed all come from the antenna.
Note that the Accessory Test is hidden by default (reset). You will have to change it to visible.

You were right it is saying that gps is not connected I took connections off again as I did sat. when I put chip in and is was not working after working fine friday.  All connections seem good and tight I even check the puck wire and it seemed fine.  My question now is there anything I did just putting chip in that could have caused the problem.  I have had this unit for about 6 months and everything was fine till put chip in just saying and help is always appreciated

I don't think the chip could be causing the GPS to show not connected.  Best bet is try your unit on another boat, or another GPS connection.
**Looking for the one that makes it all worthwhile**

Bob B has some good advice. That would be my next step.
Just out of curiosity, did you try removing the SD card and see if the GPS info returned?
HB Greg should be by Monday. He might have other suggestions.

So the GPS started working when you took the card out?
What brand and size card did you use?

No Greg went fishing friday and got the chip friday night and installed it before fishing saturday morning turn the 998 si on and no gps.  My friend who is really knowledgeable with the birds went through everything he knew and unhooked everything and nothing just temp and voltage and that all that show in slots where time gps and speed were located.  San disc 32mg is the disk I installed just to record my trips.  I have done everything everyone has told me and nothing,  appreciate any help like to have my si back

I understand now.  No, I don’t know that installing a blank memory card would have anything to do with the GPS Receiver not working.

I would try cross-testing your 998 unit on someone else’s boat that is running an external Humminbird GPS Receiver.  This does not have to be another 998 unit as any should work for this test.  This can be done with the boat on land but just not under a roof or shelter (the GPS Receiver needs to be able to have line of sight with the satellites).

If you cannot do that, check the wires at the end of the NMEA pigtail wire to make sure that they are not shorted together.  The NMEA pigtail wire is the second shorter cable that comes out of the GPS Receiver’s connector.  It has a black plastic cap on the end of it.  Just pull that off and separate the wires and try it with your unit again to see if it works.  If it starts working then that means that some of these wires were shorted.  Just insulate them from each other and place the black plastic cap back on (I would waterproof seal it).  If not, contact the Humminbird Customer Resource folks about getting your GPS Receiver back in to be tested and fixed.

Thanks for all the help guys, I didn't get on the lake again till the other day had a long illness but put boat in water and the bird works fine.  Didn't do anymore except I did put the chip back in it just for heck of it.  Been out 3 times and it works great guess it was just taking a little break.  Again thanks and good fishing
