Title: 798 wont turn on...
Post by: gr1herakleio on January 26, 2013, 07:08:15 AM
Hello everyone

I have a serious problem with my 798ci, the unit wont turn on, when i press the power button the screen shows a very dim light on the right side and thats all. My unit is out of warranty and i found it installed on my new boat i bought 2,5 years ago. I used it only for 10 hours or so, not more and then i sold the boat due to personal difficulties and removed the unit from it (working flawlesly up to the moment it was removed) so that i'd reinstall it in the future. Now that things are better for me i bought a new boat and installed it but i encounter the problem i mentioned.
I contacted local Humminbird over here and those guys were very polite and all, but they said they have to ship the unit to US to get it fixed and thats a serious problem for me as it might take 40 days or more to get it back, not to mention the costs for all that, as i live in Greece...

is there anything i can do, maybe flash the device in some way? Its so sad because the unit is in excellent condition like new out of the box, not a single drop of water ever touched it..  :(
Any help is really appreciated
Thanx

Have you made absolutely sure you have a good power source and have good connections?  The voltage can be check at the unit with the plug inserted.
Make sure you check the voltage at the unit with the unit powered on, or the reading may not reflect what the voltage actually is under load.

Thank you for your replies, but its definately not a power issue, i connected it directly to a power supply and it draws 0.02Ambers when i turn it on, nothing on screen but the dim light on the right side...

It is still possible you have a problem with the power connector itself.  Some have recommended VERY SLIGHTLY bending the male pins of the connector apart.  If the unit is drawing no current it is either the connector or you will have to send the unit in to get fixed.

Ok, ill give that a try, thank you. If it doesnt work is there a way for me to send the unit directly to Humminbird?

Yes, and Humminbird has a flat repair rate.  I'd call customer service before you send it in and they will be able to fill you in on the recommended way to send it in.
