Humminbird Ethernet - DrDepth
« on: June 17, 2011, 06:00:18 AM »
There is now support for Humminbird Ethernet in DrDepth. Currently it is
available in the 'BT+SS' version, the other versions will have it soon.

With the ethernet connection you can have sidescan mosaic drawn live
on the water.

A few tips for first time DrDepth HB users:

Use an ohm meter to verify you got the wires in correct positions while you are splicing on the RJ45 ethernet computer plug to the HB AS EB ethernet cable.   See DrDepth sidescan/Mosaic mapping user manual for which wires go where.  Drdepth tells you need you wires 1,2,3,6.  1=orange/white striped, 2=solid orange, 3=striped green white, 6=solid green.   I went ahead and connected all 8 wires to the RJ45 plug using T-568 sequence (search internet for RJ45 wiring diagram) and it works fine.  I'm guessing that the extra wires aren't used for anything by Drdepth but its a lot easier to get the RJ45 plug spliced on if you just line up the 8 different color wires in the right order and slide them in to the 8 slots in the RJ45 plug.  I had to cut the wires to slightly different lengths to get them to all to butt against the end of the RJ45 connector (just slide them in and look through clear RJ45 for which need length adjustments).  I had to buy an expensive ($20) crimping tool to crimp the RJ45 plug correctly, but it made a very good tight plug (the wires are not going to pull out).  I bought both the crimping tool and the blank RJ45 plug at Radio Shack.

On my HB 1197cSI I had to turn NEMA output to off (off is the HB default, but some you may have changed it at some point).   In Drdepth tools NMEA/COM I checked ethernet->Humminbird->no NEMA.   When I left the "no NEMA" unchecked it didn't work. I also checked "Read Humminbird data on ethernet" in the side scan settings on the Drdepth toolbar for live sidescan data.

My Humminbird 1197c SI does not transmit ethernet data in the simulator mode (off the boat in my case).   If everything is set up right DrDepth program will say connected to ethernet waiting for position, but will not receive any data.   This is important to know if you are trying to set it up off the boat inside your house. NOTE: My HB 1197c SI does transmit NMEA data in the simulator mode if you are setting up DrDepth using NMEA cable instead of ethernet.

Make sure to set your windows firewall to allow drdepth program.   If you have other firewall programs you will have to do something similar.

If you are running HB in normal mode on the boat, after selecting connect DrDepth will start by saying, connected to ethernet waiting for position, and will start receiving data and show it on the map in a few seconds.

When you are receiving data from HB over ethernet cable you won't see any data in Drdepth Tools->show NMEA.

Good luck and good fishing!
