Problem w/798 ci hd si
« on: March 26, 2012, 05:25:14 PM »
I bought my unit online and received it on saturday. I opened the box brand new and checked everything. I realized the transducer had some scratches on the bottom and on top had what looked like old sticky soda pop droplets. I also realized the transducer looked funny. Take a look at the pictures and be your own judge. I didn't worried about it too much. Mounted it on my Hobie Mirage Outback and took it out. And yes I mounted the transducer externally (My friend has the same setup that works perfect). Tried everything to clear all the clutter, but could not at all. The unit also restarts itself sometimes. Any help to clear all the clutter and the restart problem would be great. That transducer does not look like quality work in my honest opinion. Any help at all would be great...Please take a look at the pictures

I would see about testing your unit on your friend's kayak to see if you get the same results or not.  That Will tell you whether the problem is in the transducer or in the unit.  If transducer than I would make sure that this is not just a lot of wave action or surface clutter by somehow lowering the transducer down into the water farther.

Can't do that now because my friend lives in GA and I live in NC. I tested his unit out before I bought mine.

See if you can find someone else with a Humminbird Si unit and test your unit on their boat (even a non-kayaker).  If not, you should see about shipping your unit and transducer in to be tested.  I would include a picture of what you have been seeing on the screen.

Sure looks like a transducer issue to me..

Or a pin or plug connection...

This should work as you show in the pictures..

Sorry, I don't know anyone around here with a 798. I have sent a message to customer support, hopefully I get a call soon.

If you sent an email Jimmerz it may be days before they get to it.  Their main focus through the week is to answer the phone calls coming in.  So for a faster response you should call and not email the Humminbird Customer Resource folks.

You can test your 798 unit on any of the following Si unit’s transducers:
797c2 Si
898c Si
981c Si
987c Si
997c Si
998c Si
1197c Si
1198c Si
