Humminbird Ethernet Issues
« on: March 14, 2015, 12:34:29 PM »
New member, long time HB user. BIG PROBLEM!
I recently tore out my Interlink and replaced with a 5 port ethernet network setup. I am the 3rd owner of a 2010 Skeeter ZX225 w/1199 at the console, 998 & 898 at the bow. The old setup was 998 at the console, 898 and 788 at the bow, with the 788 and 998 hooked up to interlink.
So beforehand, I made sure all 3 units were updated with the latest softwares available. Hooked everything up and then powered on. My problem is the 998 WILL NOT show up on the network, but the 898 & 1199 communicate just fine. I did try swapping ethernet cables and switch ports to eliminate those. It just never comes up with an IP address. So I'm wondering if maybe while it had an older version, that that version could have possibly had the option to set a static IP and if it did and was set to static, that when upgraded to another version that took that option out, left the unit "stuck" in a static IP conflict.
So my question is this: What do you guys think about reverting to an older software for the 998 & 898 (both i would assume is necessary so that they can communicate on the network), power them up on the network, check for that setting and make sure it's set to a dynamic IP at which point it should be visible on the network? At that point, i think i'll have the confirmation necessary, and can then upgrade them back to latest so that they can communicate with the 1199. But all this leads to a more important question: what version of software if any would this be, or does it matter? I just downloaded the oldest I could find for both, v4.850.

TIA for any sort of advice and/or assistance. I'm really stumped with this one lol!

You said the latest available. Are all your units registered and did you get the download from the site? Bob

Yes, all my units are registered with HB. All current versions of software were downloaded and installed around the beginning of last month. They are as follows:
1199 - 7.460
998 - 7.510
898 - 7.510
Today I downloaded and installed 4.850 to both my 998 & 898. My next step is to hook them up together and see if anything is different, and see if I then have the option to set a dynamic IP with the network tab.

I don't think you will get ethernet to work with 4.8. You had the correct software on everything. I don't think anything in set up would prevent your ip from registering on the network. I think you will have to get CS involved. Bob

Well my thought is this. And CS is next step if this doesn't work. Any software will be capable of networking since the units themselves were manufactured with the ability. The change in software versions is what makes the difference in IP assignment. Earlier versions had the option to set as static or dynamic IP. At some point, and I'm not sure which version it is/was, that option was removed as the newer software automatically assigns the IP addresses. So if this unit was set manually in the past with a static IP, and then updated, the hardware could be conflicting with the newer software. I've read of the same issues, but this is the only resolution I've been able to find for this same symptomatic issue.
Will let you know of the outcome. Will try it out tomorrow.

thanks for you input!

I dont know what version your 998 came from the factory with but you do not want to back date your software past the factory version. there are many issues posted about going back past the factory installed version.

I hope it works out. If not when you call be sure to mention the 998 was on interlink before. There may be something turned on that messes with ethernet. Please post your fix. Bob
Been researching old posts and the ethernet manual. There are conditions that require a certain power up sequence. I tried to copy the page but failed. You could download the ethernet manual off the HB site. Page 8 might be what you need. Good luck.

Trytoofish: THANKS! after some more reading, found that 5.410 was the first software that was ethernet enabled. But could only find 5.700 for both the 898 & 998. Tried that, and could not find a solution. The 898 still automatically assigned an IP address, and the 998 never assigned one. So I'm still stuck. Next step is to contact HB CS, and likely will have to send this unit off for repair.

thanks to all for your input on this.
