Title: 958c DI combo
Post by: sttpangling on April 14, 2013, 11:23:27 AM
I just purchased this fishfinder a over the winter and have had it out a couple of times now. After the purchase I scoured the internet looking for information on this particular unit and was surprised to find nothing, not even a review or video on the product. Was thinking I should have got a 998 with side-imagine  :-\

First time out with it it worked great, only thing was I could not mark a darn fish! We were catching walleye all over the place and only marked one fish, at that time it was that first time marked my jig as well and the fish was in pursuit. Other than that I can't say I marked another fish all day. Didn't play around with the settings yet but the unti was used right out of the box. I did bump up the sensitivity on both the DI and 2d sonar.

My older 787c2i was a fish marking machine, there was not a fish that passed under the boat without showing up on the sonar.

Is there a software update the new unit may need or certain settings it should be on? I primarily want to use the 958 for marking fish but think I may have picked up the wrong unit.

Just looking for a bit of info if anyone is using one!

Thanks in advance... Andrew

You are aware that your 2D sonar is 25* and 16*.  Your 958DI uses 200/455khz beams which translate into less sonar coverage than your other unit.  200/83khz beams translate to 20* and 60* beams.

That makes a lot of sense. I guess I will leave the old 787 beside it to use as a 'fish finder' and use the 958c DI combo for DI and navigation....  :(

Does this unit still need a software update? I have not registered the unit as well so maybe I should. This will be my first year using Humminbird on the PC so any useful tips would be helpful. Don't want to get to technical but should both units get software updates? They work fine, minus the new 958 not marking anything.

Thanks

Andrew

Andrew,
The 958c should still be able to mark fish.  You may have to make some menu tweaks here and there but it should do the job.
Besides turning up the Sensitivity you should consider using the SwitchFire menu on the Max Mode setting if not in real shallow water.
What software version are you running in each unit?
