2009 MWC Lake City, MN
Pools 3 & 4-Mississippi River

It’s time for the second stop of the 2009 Masters Walleye Circuit Central Division, this year to be held May 16-17 on Pools 3&4 of the Mississippi River out of Lake City, MN. Teams will use this tournament to establish position for a shot at the Team of the Year title, as well as an opportunity to gather more points towards an invite to the Championship, held in 2010.  A field of 72 teams has converged on the Lake City area during the practice period, in an effort to shrink the vast amount of available water down to a few productive areas holding bigger fish. They are competing for over $46,000 in prize money in the most prestigious walleye team tournament in North America. Many patterns and locations have the potential to produce this years winning catch.

Recent tournaments have produced astonishing weights for this section of the legendary waterway, maybe even beyond some of the local’s expectations. Teams will have plenty of water to fish, both Pools 3 & 4 are fishable, as well as all of the backwaters up to any railroad bridge. The fish are post-spawn by a few weeks and on the move. With water levels dropping and warming into the mid 60’s, the best teams will adjust to the constant changing conditions and river currents to intercept fish on the move. Some of the recent hotspots have the potential to produce like before, but also could be past their post-spawn prime. Areas like Katrina, or Pig Point, are no longer secret local “hotspots”!! Those two areas have been the talk of Pool 4 the last few weeks, and recent catches are the reason. Both spots have produced monster limits to 40 pounds, but can these spots keep producing with water temps climbing and fishing pressure increasing? If fish are there, it’s a race from Lake City, and any wind will make for a long run up the lake. However, there are many other options now available to the teams as they prefish the week leading up to game day. The water temperature and slower current may ignite the fish to seek current seams and structure areas, like the dozens of wing dams and riprap shorelines found in the river. An excellent way to find “hidden” underwater rock piles and rock points, is to use Humminbird Side Imaging. A unit like the 997c Si Combo shows desirable fish-holding structure to the side of the boat and is proven to be extremely effective on the Mississippi River. Also, trolling leadcore on Lake Pepin is as common as trolling spinner rigs on Green Bay in May!! Long a leadcore trollers paradise, catching limits of saugers up to 4 pounds has produced in the lake recently.
