Title: Helix 10 SI GPS TM mount
Post by: Porter1965 on March 24, 2017, 09:29:08 AM
Guys I have been reading every thread I can find on this topic and before I mount my transducer on my trolling motor I would like to ask for your input 1 more time. I have a Tracker "Targa" 20 ft and it came with a Lowrance transom mount. I'm asking your advice to mount the SI transducer on the transom opposite side of the Lowrance (Port side of boat , Lowrance is on Starboard side) and hope they are not on the same frequency and "crosstalk" or would I be smarter to mount the SI transducer on the TM and deal with the screen issues I will have when I have to turn the trolling motor (Minn Kota v2) with foot controls. I just don't want to keep myself confused trying to read the screen when I'm changing direction of the trolling motor with foot controls?

Thanks for your help and input

Anything to the side of the SI xducer (all the way to the water's surface) can partially block the SI beam on that side ...

Small blockages can create a darker image on that blockage side ... Large blockages can totally black out parts of the SI image on that blockage side ...

One can lessen this effect by mounting the SI xducer close to (and slightly lower) than the obstruction ... thereby allowing the SI beam to emit under the obstruction ...
-----

Crosstalk can happen when 2 units are transmitting the same frequency regardless of the 20ft difference from the front of the boat to the transom of the boat ... closer to each other just makes it worse ...

I've picked up SI crosstalk from a boater 50 yards away that happened to be transmitting the same SI frequency ...

Ricki thank you for your quick response in your humble opinion would you mount the transducer to the bottom of the TM or put it on the transom for the Helix SI ?

SI is most advantageous as a search tool...

You should consider which station your fishing methods would most benefit from SI searching  ...

Some use SI at the console for searching ... and then use 2d (or DI) at the bow for fishing ...

Some use SI at the bow for searching and fishing at the same time (realizing turning the motor can skew the SI images somewhat) ...

I spend 98% of my fishing day at the bow so I want my best technology (SI) at the bow ...

Some (like tournament bass fishermen) spend 75% of their fishing day at the console searching with SI ...and only 25% of their day actually fishing at the bow ...
