How to Power-Up at Home (Learn Before Launch)!
« on: January 03, 2010, 12:35:01 PM »
I plan to purchase a new 898 SI when they arrive next month.  Can someone walk me through the steps to power up the unit at home so I can get some experience before I install it on my boat this Spring?  I have a 12v Small Engine Battery (Lawn Tractor Type).  I'm sure a fuse is needed between unit and battery. (Is one supplied with unit?)  With all the features on the Humminbird SI that I have read about, I want to be familiar with this unit prior to my first use.  Thanks to all.

Hi Deltaden,
that's exactly how I powered up my unit when I got it last year in January.
Be sure that the battery is fully loaded and get an in line fuse adapter, 'cause that didn't come with my unit.
I used a bucket full of water and placed the transducer inside to attache the ducer and play around with the unit. You can also run it in simulator mode without the transducer.

Have fun with it and be prepared to be impressed!!

Same here,

Used the pond here and our little 10 feet 5 hp "beekman sprinter"
For more fun you should start the tractor  8).

Just try the simulation to get to know the buttons and then take her out ASAP

The startup software makes first time use easy.
I would suggest you play with it before installing.
When you power up you will select either simulator or normal.
I bought my si in Jan 09. The simulator mode is wonderful.
When others were ice fishing, I live in Illinois, I was learning the bells and whistles w/ the si.
Get to know your unit is simulator mode. Learn go to waypoints, arrival alarms, the whole shabang.
What will get interesting is playback your recordings on a pc with the viewer software. I initially had some problems but was able to iron them out with the help of this site. Everyone is willing to help. I know there are some very techno savvy wizards on this site. They helpled me.
When you install your ducer be careful when locating it.
I fish for walleye and salmon. I have a kicker motor. I had a marine service install the ducer initially, that was a no go. I reinstalled it myself. But I took my boat out and determined the left to right tilt. I have a kicker motor on the starboard side. This will make the hull list to the starboard side. My angle of declination was about 15 degrees. So I had to offset it that much when the boat was in the water during its natural buoyancy.  I normally stand or sit on the starboard side. But have fun learning the si.

It should be like the 997 If you don't hook up a transducer to the unit it will automatically go to the simulator mode and you can go from there.
Do like the big fish do, eat the little ones. Throw the big ones back so someone else can have an enjoyable day on the water.

I have an older ducer that I hook up to mine. Plus I use two 6Volt emergency exit sign batteries in series. You can get them at any home improvement store.

My setup comes in handy when I'm helping someone install their gear. I make sure everything works before installing it on their boat.

One of these days I'll luck up on a GPS receiver ;D
Freedom isnt free, if you want to know the real cost visit a national cemetery or VA Hospital.

I use a power converter suggested by Robert.  I have found that many times I want to bring the unit in an review my recordings.

Humviewer and Yellowfin programs only allow you to view the sonar recordings.

Like Sortoe, I have an extra transducer and also have a GPS receiver, this way I can play with all of the features.

The power converter allows me to play as long as I want without recharging or bringing a battery into the house.

I have just ordered the 2010 Navionics Southern Chip which I will be spend lots of time with the unit in the house learning the chart programs (back ordered as expected).
