Title: new guy and need xducer placement help
Post by: king0581 on January 15, 2012, 05:55:58 PM
Hello forum folks. I just got a 798 and need some advice on mounting the transducer on my pro craft 375dc. Some pics of my boat.

I've seen some pictures of the transducer mounted on the jack plate and was just wondering if something like this would work even though I dont have one....

I figure I wont be able to have the motor trimmed all the way down when using the side imaging no matter where I mount it and the motor was trimmed all the way down in these pics. Thanks for the help folks.

Probably half of the questions on this site are dedicated to transducer
placement.  I would suggest you search for 'transducer placement' or
'transducer location'.

Good Luck.

King

go to ---> http://www.dougvahrenberg.com/Videos.html (http://www.dougvahrenberg.com/Videos.html)  <--- scroll down to the bottom of the videos, Doug has videos on installing the transducer.  Also, Doug has a 9 part seminar which will help you get the most out of your unit.  Even though Doug is using an 1197 it is still very beneficial.

Also, I believe I read someplace that the transducer should be 15" or more from the prop, to minimize interference.

King,
In the third picture you posted, that location may work well but only if the transducer sticks back far enough that the left and right Si signals do not get blocked by the transom.  I cannot tell if this will happen with the supplied picture or not.  Loosely install the transducer hardware and have someone hold it in place; bend down and with your eyes level with the transducer view it from both the left and right sides of the transom.  If you can see the entire left and right sides of the transducer than you are good to go.  Otherwise there will be signal blockage and you may have to end up mounting it way to the side of the motor like where that temperature sensor is located or you will have to think about mounting a second CSi transducer on the opposite side of the motor…

Thanks Greg. It likes about a 1/2" of having the transducer sticking completely out past the transom when mounted like that. Whats your thoughts on just moving it over between the motor mount and the tie down. With it right here it has a clean view side to side if the motor is trimmed up a little. http://i256.photobucket.com/albums/hh191/king0581/IMG00090-20120116-1657.jpg[/img]](http://i256.photobucket.com/albums/hh191/king0581/IMG00090-20120116-1657.jpg) (http://[IMG)

I think that would be a good place to test it at.  See if you can find some marine grade VHB tape (3M makes a Very High Bond tape for automotive use) and test it at low speed only – or rig up your own way to test it without adding holes to your boat.  You need to look for any signs of Left Si sonar blocking like constant vertical lines next to the centerline.  Be sure to set the Si Range to 20 feet when doing this so the lines are visible.

Thanks Greg. I'm pretty sure ill have to trim the motor up a bit to get a good view on the left side either way. I would just run another transducer but wanna save that money for a new trolling motor right now. If my ram mount comes in I'm gonna try to get the unit mounted and this location a test this weekend. I have some good double sided tape that I use on my homebrew trail cameras that should hold up good for the test. Ill post back with the results after testing. Thanks, Lee

“homebrew trail cameras”?  Sounds like a good subject for another post!

Yea I got tired of buying cameras that didn't last much more than two seasons, so I make my own now. Found some sites online with alll the info and it took off from there. I've got 12 of my own and have built a few for family. Imo for my bang for buck I can't beat it. I also haven't dropped $500+ ona recoynx but I'm more than satisfied with the quality of pictures I get from the ones I can build myself. I like tinkering so its something to pass the time between my hunting and fishing seasons.

Your transom looks similar to mine.  Here is were I put mine and have no issues.  I can run both my lowrance and hbird with no interference.  Lucky I quess, I hope this will give you some ideas.
