Do you have the long file name? My 998 will not recognize this as an update, never asks if I want to install. I tried starting unit with sd card in and inserting sd card after the unit is on.

JimJack.  which unit exactly do you have.  The file we put in the downloads may not be for your 998.

Let me know and I will check..

998CSI Serial# 12020702-0143. According to serial # should have been produced this year.

Both HB Greg and I sent you 5.700 in transferbigfiles.
Is this the long name?    998-v5-700.bin

No 998-v5-700 is not the long name.
An example would be the 6.18 file name it is 1992d7f33db740a5b03d50f031e454f8.bin when you download from HB.

Newkid, I got your transferbig file but forgot to log the long name and only filed the short name.
If you could can you give me the long name again.  Not on transferbigfile but just an entry here so I can update my file..
the short name is something like 998C_5.700 and the long name is about 32 characters in length. Both end in bin.
I thinki I need to sort out the 998C from the 998CSI.
Thanks, chuck

Thnx for the effort, I got a copy that the unit recognized but the buttons quit working right before the load sw screen appears.

Jimjack, what is the name of the file you loaded?  both long and short.
also did you wait for the update to complete (takes a bit of time) before pushing buttons?
And did you restore defaults lprior to updating?

The file name is the same as you have already. HB Greg says name should not matter. My buttons stop working so I can not restore defaults. My buttons do not work so I can not tell unit to load the back level sw. My buttons stop working during the load screen that says press menu for start up options.

OK.  I have checked and the file you downloaded form here is the right file for your unit. CSI.
I just forgot to document the long name.

Now for your problem:

confirm that you used this sequence for the update.
1) powered on and restored defaults.
2) powered off
3) inserted the update card in the unit
4) powered on unit
5) received prompt asking if you want to load the code level and you replied yes
6) received the prompt askikng if you wanted to abort the load and you replied no
7) Waited until the red screen changed to green before doing anything else.

Jim Jack, at this point I think that your only option is to call Humminbird and get your unit in to be reprogrammed.

I don’t know Chuck.  I’m hoping for a button combination at start up that sends the unit into a “safe mode” that would allow the installation of software or somehow help in the recovery of the unit when things don’t go right with a software update.

OK, do what you can.  The loss of bootstrap has really hurt our abilities to fix units in the field..
Especially with the issues we are seeing with updates and procedures.

Went to HB yesterday, diagnosis was bad key pad, the Tech said he was surprised that the power button turned it on. The keypad going bad could have caused the unit to think I hit MOB. The tech installed a new one and good to go, whole unit feels snappier like it is faster than new. Very nice people, and had me in and out in about 1/2 hr.

I hope Greg took you to Willie T's for lunch.
Isn't it nice when you get straight to the factory...
good deal.

Now for some fishing time..
