To update or Not to update????
« on: July 24, 2011, 08:56:13 PM »
Well i was on humminbirds website and it looks like my unit is ready for the 5.7 update.I gotta be honest I'm very uneasy about updating my unit. The last time i did an update was on my 898 unit and the minute i re powered, The unit was never the same. The screen was flashing the sensitivity on the DI was going crazy..I sent it back to the vender and got my money back. From what i see I'm not alone it seems like everytime somebody updates their unit goes crazy and is never the same.I see posts on here now about the 5.7 update not only not working right but guys units acting up.Now i think its great that humminbird offers updates and it was a big selling point for me getting a humminbird,But until humminbird can get these updates undercontrol i cant update my unit.I still haven't got my 998 working perfect yet having some interference issues and what not.I just cant risk my unit going heywire. So i gotta hold off.... as much as i want to update it so bad..... I cant risk it.....Any thoughts????

DD; Yep a upgrade can go bad real quick!! I follow the HB inst to the letter and always a new clean SD card. So far with I have not had any problem's.

My drill is: New blank SD card, careful down load of update, save all data on unit to a SD card, remove all cards from unit, restore unit default, upload SD card, restart unit (pray), upload SD nav data.

It works for me!  :)Enjoy Roddy

I always update as soon a new update comes out.
I figure if there's any problems, they'll fix them with the next update. :)

I sent my unit back to HB to fix the power button, I did not want the update, but I guess when you send your unit in they automatically update. Im not happy about it, but what can I do. I ALWAYS wait to update because every time they do an update there is always a problem of sorts. Unfortunately for me HB decided I needed the update. My rule is, unless the update has something you must have or fixes a known issue then dont update. If it aint broke dont fix it....just sayin

You can always go back to the last update that worked best for you but follow the directions of the uploading of the new updates.  Always try and have one of the last updates still around.  Usually somehwere on this website, they have it so download it there.  Good Luck.

There are some issues that are NOT known by the users, but only to HB.
The updates probably fix more problems than they create.

That's why it's always best to update.

I somewhat agree with you IT, but it is always nice for the user to know the fixes or enhancements.
Upgrade is fine if all goes well but as we have seen on these units that all does not go well for some. So we need to get a good feeling on the upgrade before we do this..

Have a 998csi with the latest updates.  As a PC person I believe in updates - provided there is a solid method to "undo".

I also have Garmin units and keep them up to date.  When downloading their updates, they describe exactly what changes are being made from one version to the other.  So you can decide for yourself.

Perhaps we could suggest Humminbird document the same way.

We document the changes made that will affect the end user.  What you guys don’t see are all the changes made for in house manufacturing and testing.

Greg, are you saying that our code contains lines for your testing.  Hmmmmmmm....should that not be stripped for the end user so we have more processor room...?

Chuck,
The extra code is probably so HB can test units that are sent in to them for problems.  It makes sense to do it that way.

One of our Software or Test Engineers could explain it all better but; part of the code in the units contains testing software that allows new and returned units to be tested via computer.  We have to have some way of communicating and testing these units Chuck.  As we encounter new problems that code has to be added to or updated.  This is sometimes included in the same code that gets released to you the Customer.  Sometimes we update the software in units and it does not get released to the public.  This is when the software updates were only for internal testing or to make changes due to a component change.  This is why sometimes you will see a post by someone that has (as an example) version 5.850 software in their unit but the last software update was only version 5.800.

Greg,
It seems to me that having some users with newer software than what is available to the public will be very confusing.  I understand that this can happen if a person sends in their machine for service and the newest software is installed on their machine, mainly for internal testing purposes.

But, if someone puts a post up talking about version 5.850, and the newest software update available to everyone else is 5.800, then this is going to generate a lot of questions asking why 5.850 is not available to download, and where did the person get that update from.  Do they work for Humminbird or something. ::)

Would a better way be to put any new updates on the website for download and if necessary, specifiy that the update is only for internal testing purposes,  and will not affect the function of the unit at all for the end user.

This would also save the techs some time, because people like me :) will automatically download the newest update (no matter what it is for).  That will be one less thing the techs need to do when a machine comes in  (not all the machines, but probably a lot of them).

Just a thought.

When the new updates get installed on the forum then one of the new or imporved areas will be the downloads.
Here we should have access to the new as well as older versions.
So....if a new update on the unit does not go as expected we can fall back to a previous code....
Great thing these computers....

ITGEEK,
The ‘powers-that-be’ don’t want to post any software to the Humminbird web site that does not give the Customer some feature, function or fix.  I doubt that they would change their stance on this.  From what I have heard from the Techs; most of the units that come in for servicing have to have the software updated (they have to have current software to be able to past the testing).

Yea I hear you Greg.

The powers that be should understand that from a psychological perspective, if I know that version 5.850 is out there somewhere, and I'm only running 5.800, then I'm unhappy. :)

What model unit do you have SkeeterMatt?
What version software did you update from and what version did you go to?
Have you tried reloading the last version of software into your unit?
Did you update HumminbirdPC or make any changes to your computer?

No problems SkeeterMatt as I have made waypoints in Tibet as well… after the first or second time you think that I wouldn’t do it again (and again…).  Glad it is all working now.  According to my Father-in-law; crow isn’t so bad fried with a some pepper gravy and biscuits!
