I have been trying to add text to the startup screen, but no luck. I have followed Greg's instructions and the same on Humminbird PC. I can get it to load on card, but not unit. I did not want to hookup unit to computer. Instructions state it can be done with SD card. Open to suggestions. I was hoping to load on one card, and use on multiple units. 998, 898, 788DI, using Sandisk 4GB Help appreciated.

(including remembering to select "Save")...
(and remembering to select the "Eject" arrow under the SD Card icon)...

To answer your question, yes. The difference being, I do not have the unit information showing. I assume this is done when hard wired to computer. I also noticed I can open the card to see the script.

When you open the card and look at the script; is it what you typed in as personalized text?
Have you tried both installing the memory card and powering the unit on and also installing the memory card after the unit has been powered on?
Try it again but export your Nav Data to the memory card from your unit first and then add the personalized text.

Greg, yes to both ways of loading. Yes, the script did show on the open card as written. I copied my nav data to a separate card, and then deleted all nav data. Tried the script card again using on startup as well as full on. Nothing. Not to be. I appreciate your suggestions.

HMMMMMM ......I just did this to my 2 units last week.
Did the nav data load to the unit again when you inserted it? There is a profile.txt file on the card that you can open with Notepad to look at it....is the text in there if you look at it that way? (I wouldn't edit the file with Notepad....just look at it.)
What text did you enter? (Wondering if there could have been some special characters not recognized by the unit.)
Here is what I did...
1. Exported nav data to a SD card.
(At this point, the unit has created a profile.txt file, but there will be no text in the 4 lines.
2. Open the card with Humminbird PC as in the instructions and save the text entered in the 4 lines.
3. I also added a waypoint with Humminbird PC.....Just so I could see the unit recognize the card and ask to load nav data.
4. Loaded the card in the unit when it was fully started up in forced simulator mode and told it yes to load the nav data.
5. Powered the unit off and removed the SD card..... and the text I entered displayed on the unit at startup.
I did this for my 1197 and my 1198...both worked fine.
What software version is on your unit?

Bob B, I tried your way, but still no luck. What are your settings in Notepad. This may be my problem, that it will not recognize certain fonts.

To look at the file, I don't do anything special with Notepad.....just right click on the file and tell it to open with Notepad.......I am not editing the file with Notepad, just looking at it.
Not sure what could be going wrong if you are inserting the text with HB PC.
Did you try adding the waypoint with HB PC to see if the unit asked if you wanted to load nav data?

I don't edit in notepad. When I eject the card from the PC, load with one new waypoint and script in to the unit [ Ver 7.090 ] 998hd, the waypoint loads. Put the card back in PC, open with notepad and the script is blank. Such simple instructions, and I can't get it to work.

Could be a bug in 7.09........Have you called customer service?

glasscat, is your unit remembering any menu setting changes that you have made?
That is very strange that the unit is blanking out the text.

Greg, all presets seem to be there. I remembered from other brand about using too large of a card, so tried with a 2 GB card. Same results. Just not writing to card for transfer.

I ran into this SAME issue on an 899 a while ago - and I'm not sure if it's a S/W bug, type of card or magic voodoo!
I had some "keypad illumination problems" with my 899 (come to find out they all are not lit up as well as the older units) and I was sent a replacement unit - this had the same lighting, but it was acting strange locking up on me and every time I inserted a "new" profile.txt on a blank card - the machine would wipe the personalized text from the SD Card!

Long story short if I slid the lock on the SD Card OR made the profile.txt file attributes read only it would indeed read and load the personal info.
Crazy, huh??
Slide the lock tab on your SD Card after you use HB PC to create a new profile.txt (yes, delete the old one) - go thru the steps - remove the card after and report back if that does the trick - I am sure Greg will be as interested as I am!

I have been having the same problem with my 1199 unit. Will try your suggestion and see it will work for me. I have an 898 and (2) 998's that the personalized text loaded in the past with no problem but the software versions on these units was 6.490 on the 898 and (1) 998 and the other 998 had 6.610.

I have tried all of the above suggestions without results. I have noticed after attempted installation, checking the card in notepad, the script is deleted but the software version is shown. Has anyone attempted to add script on unit with ver. 7,090 ?

Did you try locking the write tab as swf1960 suggested ...... after you write the text with HB PC, but before you insert it in the unit.
As a double check that it is writing correctly with HB PC, you could look at it after you have write protected the SD card, before you put it in the unit.
If it is write protected, there should be no way for the unit to erase the text.

THAT is exactly the problem I had with an 899 v7.02, of course I made the profixt.txt read only, if leaving the same card in - as it will do exactly as described - it blanks the:

P4
Data fields.
I have v7.090 on my 998 but added the text before updating to v7.09, but the behavior is the same.
That's why I said to LOCK the card so the unit cannot WRITE to it, only read it.
If you right click the profixt.txt in windows explorer, go to properties and tick the read only field - it cannot be over-written by the unit!

I have tried to get the Personalized text to load to my 1199 with software version 7.020 with no success. I can get the text to display on the screen and then remove the card but after the unit is shut down and restarted the text may remain for one start up then disappears after that. Did not have any issues with personalized text being installed on any of my other three units, 899 and (2) 998's but they were done with software versions 6.420, 6.490 and 6.610. I have tried to load the text in regular start up mode and in simulation mode using the same card I have always used for updates and personalized text and even tried a new card with the same results. Do not understand how it can be there one minute and gone the next. Strange! Must be the Halloween gremlins still hanging around.

Some of you guys with the problem please call customer service about it so it gets officially logged as a problem.
I am sticking with the older software for now. May have to update if I get a 360 or heading sensor GPS.

Do this:
If you right click the profixt.txt in windows explorer, go to properties and tick the read only field - it cannot be over-written by the unit!
THEN the text will stay and read it and is unable to over-write it, just don't put that card in another model ~ EVER!!!
I'm pretty sure it could do ugly things to the other unit.
Bob B is RIGHT - this needs to be brought to HB's attention ASAP and logged as a bug to be fixed.
Greg may have some insight on this as well.

I finally got mine to load on 998. I formatted card and tried on 788. It worked first time. However, I only used the first three lines for text and the fourth line filled in as 13131313. I redid card and filled card with script on all four lines. The fourth line now shows text followed by 1313. Is there a procedure for clearing all lines and starting over?

If it is not going to load like it is designed to do then I am not going to force it. Don't want to mess something else up or the performance of the unit by doing this. Will report it and wait till they get it fixed. Not that big of a deal but a nice touch to have the personalized text on the units. I still have to send unit in to get 800 kHz fixed sometime this winter.

I was able to do this on a 998c Si model unit with the 7.090 software but I first had to save some waypoints to the memory card otherwise it would not recognize that the
memory card was there and nothing would get updated. These are the steps I took:
1. Fully formatted the memory card I was using. I did not allow it to use the (default) quick format as I wanted the memory card clean so as not to introduce any variables here.
2. Installed the memory card into the 998 unit and powered it on. The unit had a transducer and GPS Receiver connected to it so it started up in the Normal operating mode just as if I was out fishing.
3. I exported the waypoints in the 998 unit to the memory card.
4. Extracted the memory card from the 998 unit and, using HumminbirdPC, I changed the personalized text.
5. Closed HumminbirdPC and ejected/safely removed the memory card from the computer.
6. Installed the memory card into the still running 998 unit where, after a few moments, it asked me if I wanted to “Upload Nav Data from SD card?”.
7. Answered “Yes” and unit told me that “No new Nav Data was found”.
8. Removed memory card (I could have left it in, either way) and cycled the power on the 998 unit. The new text was showing and has continued to show through the next ten+ power cycles whether the same memory card was installed or not.
I went ahead and reported this to our Engineering group.

I had my text loaded on a prior version of my 998, but my "replacement" 899 which was buggy exhibited this issue out of the box with v7.02.....

Greg, I did what you recommended and the personalized text loaded and worked the first time and continues to display as well. Adding a couple of waypoints to the card from the unit made all the difference. I don't keep waypoints on my 1199 bow unit so I just added a couple of waypoints in simulation mode and then exported them to the card and everything worked perfectly after that. Thank you for your help it is greatly appreciated!

One more thing that may be worth testing with the newer software.......If a blank SD card is inserted to make recordings or snapshots, I think the unit will automatically put a profile.txt file one it.......If this card is left in the unit when powering off and on, does the custom text go away?

So what you are saying is you now have customized start up text on your 1199?
Sorry if I seem confused, but it reads like you're all set following Greg's suggestions - HOPE SO!
