798 for a kayak with QuadBeam
« on: June 15, 2011, 12:47:36 AM »
Hi

I have a couple of questions:

-   Which QuadBeam transducer is needed for 798?
-   Will I need to replace the dual-beam transducer with the QuadBeam one, or do I need both of them?

Thanks

I don't understand your question... Since a 798 comes with a SI tranducer, where the Quadrabeam comes from???

It's an option on 798.

Hi irfan,

The 798ci HD SI Combo comes with a Compact Dual/Side Imaging transducer ~ 20/60/86(2) degrees ~ 200/83/455 kHz ~ with built-in temperature (XNT 9 SI 180). It supports the Quadra Beam transducer ~ 20/60/90 Degrees ~ 200/83/455 kHz ~ with built in temperature (XNT 9 QB 90 T). Both transducers have the 200/83 kHz 2D elements. You could just replace the transducer that comes with the 798ci HD SI with the Quadra Beam, but I'm not sure why you would want to do that. You could switch between the two transducers with the TS3-W Transducer Switch along with changing the appropriate menu setting. The TS3-W was still on back order from Humminbird when I checked several weeks ago (TS3-W @ J&H Products).

For about the same price as both items you could get a XHS 9 HDSI 180 T transducer and build a small towfish. Some people find they get better resolution using the HDSI with the 798ci SI than they do with the Compact SI transducer (I could defiantly see the difference). The towfish removes most of the hull movement from the sonar capture when used in a small boat and the water isn't relatively calm.

Tight lines,
Darrell

irfan,
There are three versions of the QuadraBeam transducer, depending on where you are going to mount it at:
XNT-9-QB-90-T is a transom mounted QuadraBeam transducer
XP-9-QB-90-T is an inside-the-hull mounted transducer
XNT-9-QB-90-T is a trolling motor mounted transducer
All three work the same.

If you are using one of these in combination with the CSi transducer that came with your 798 unit than you will have to use the TS3 Transducer Switch for the extra Side Beams in the QuadraBeam transducer to work.  You will also have to change the Transducer Select menu each time that you switch it so that the Side Beam sonar data from the QuadraBeam is shown correctly.  If you were to connect a QuadraBeam transducer up to the As-Si-DB-Y transducer splitter cable (in the DualBeam plugged position) than it would be treated as only a DualBeam transducer and the it’s Side Beams would not work.

Drifter,
That would be the TS3 Transducer Switch.  It was released just a week or so ago, so check back.

Thank you, both Drifter and Greg for your responses.

Greg: Is there any advantage in using both transducers?  If SI is part of QuadraBeam, then doesn’t it make sense to use only that one?

Thanks

The only advantages of the QuadraBeam transducer over the Si transducer would be that you can mount it inside-the-hull of a fiberglass boat.  This makes it easier to scan a wide area at faster boat speeds.  This is possible since the QuadraBeam Side Beam sonar can update faster than the Si sonar can.  Other than that I cannot think of an advantage.
