can I power up my 898c si in my house without hurting it
« on: October 06, 2013, 06:49:37 AM »
I bought a boat with the 898c Si unit on it and downloaded the manual onto my pc. Is it possible to connect a 12 volt power supply to it and get used to the functions without the transducer connected or gps antenna connected? If so what kinds of things will I be able to do with it in my house? I have a navionics card in it also

Yes it's possible. Without the transducer connected, I think it goes into demo/simulator mode tho.

What type of a cable do you need to get to do this and is it something you need to order from BH or another location.

Can see were it would be handy.

Some retailers will also carry the PC-11 power cable that you can use for this.

You can do just about everything you can while on the water besides make a sonar recording (but you can review one).  You can make changes that will be remembered if you put the unit into the Normal operation mode or you can just play with it and let the unit reset itself by using the POS Simulator mode which the unit will automatically enter into with only the power cable connected.  The attached document should help explain the modes your unit can operate in.

graggy and slabbacks  -- remember to install a 3A in-line fuse between the red lead on the power cord and the (+) on you power source.
Copied this from HB Greg's other post " I like the blade type fuse holders much better than the cylindrical type fuses. ". I agree.

Good read! And thx for the tip on the inline fuse.  Can set back and watch the game while i delete some of these unneeded wpts.  Wish we could get a snapshot without the wpt when needed ...my home lake is starting to look like one big blue dot lol

The in-line fuse is there to protect the power source and the area surrounding it.  So the unit does not “need” the fuse but you may want it in case something goes wrong so that nothing burns up.

Greg, I wanted to be able to see my waypoints and tracks. I dont know if I'm doing something wrong or not. It seems like without the gps antenna plugged in I cant see anything. Should I be able to see my waypoints and tracks with just the power cord? If so could you tell me how?

Yes you can graggy.
Just power your unit up in the forced Simulator mode:
- Power the unit on as normal (you only need the power cable connected for this).
- When the unit is showing the “Humminbird 898c Si Combo” screen, press the MENU button.
- The display should show three menu options.  Use the four-way arrow keys to highlight and select (use the Right Arrow) “SIMULATOR”.
This will put the unit into a simulated operational mode that will remember all normal menu changes just like the unit would if you were on the water.  You can zoom out and scroll over to your waypoints or even change where the boat’s simulated position is.
