998c Sonar or SI not performing correctly!
« on: July 06, 2016, 02:36:54 PM »
I am having trouble with my 998c show the contour of the bottom on the sonar side and I get a lot of heavy white on the SI. DI seems to be working fine.  I reset factory settings and upgraded the firmware, still no help.  Wondering if my transducer is bad?  Any comments would be appreciated.

It could be a lot of individual things and/or a lot of things combined. One thing I would check is to see where your Noise Filter is set. The higher it is set, the less 'dynamic' the sonar will show. As far as the SI, I'd check the contrast settings. To me, it seems the sensitivity is turned too high and the contrast is adjusted improperly. Or it could be something else entirely.

Appreciate the suggestions.  I'll try them and see if it helps.

I will try, it sits in the water year round.  I scrubbed the Xducer pretty good and removed the algae.

My query of your xducer installation is leading to the possibility that the SI beams may be partially blocked by other objects attached to your boat on either (or both) sides of the HDSI xducer - motor, trim tabs, live well screens, other xducers, etc ...

The SI beams cover from past vertical under the boat ...to the water's surface on each side ...

The line on the right side of the Nadir (water column) is your boat.  The white in the image is either too much sensitivity or too much power.  Are you running 800 khz or 455 khz?  At 800 khz and 120' I can see a problem because the range is too high and the power is too hot.  The lower the power the more range you can get.  Higher power gives you less range.  Also 120' is too wide for 12' of water.  Bring it in until you see bottom in your whole screen and see what happens.  Some will say 2 1/2 times the depth but I have found that seeing bottom in the screen is pretty decent.  But you have to overlap because even though you see bottom small objects can be missed.  Try 455 khz, @  about 60' and play with sensitivity between 10-13 to see what happens.  Mark

Rickie,  I checked and the xducer is free of obstruction, it's on a Pontoon boat.

Mark, you were correct, I had it too hot.  Brought it down to 455 and works much better looking 50' out.  Still having some trouble with the sonar.  It got better when I changed the "Switchfire" to max mode from clear, however, now it won't show depth or when it does it flashes?
