Title: Powering up off the boat.
Post by: keeponkeepnon on March 18, 2011, 12:24:21 AM
I want to turn on my 798 to play around, get to know it, put in way points etc.  I do not keep my boat at my house though.  When I was installing the unit I tried powering it up with just the power cord plugged in (no gps or transducer) and it didn't seem to work.  How are you powering up at home?

Hi Keepokeeponon,

See file attached.

This is what I did through advice from guys on this great forum

1. Go to an electrical/computer store and buy a switching power supply 240v input and 12volt output, Fuseable with a female socket.

2. Buy from Humminbird Pc-11 cable (power lead for head of your HB.).

3. Buy male end to plug into female socket and join the red and black wires  to the HB cable. (red to red, black to black)

You will not get GPS or transducer naturally but you can learn heaps from this set up sitting in your living room.

This setup is how and looking at this forum I learnt my 898 HB

Your switching power supply might be slightly different in the US as long as it has 12v output

The input supply for the USA is 120 V-AC input with the 12 V-DC output.   Many store that sell electronics have these supplies and for a reasonable price.  Just make sure to fuse the red input lead.

Thanks for the information guys.  So all it needs is a 12v power source.  I am not sure why I remember it not working when I had it hooked up with out the GPS or transducer cables attached.

I got a PC 10 power cable from Humminbird plugged it in to my HB, put a inline fuse (3Ap) on the red (hot wire) attached clips to both ends (black and white) then clipped em to a small battery (lawn mower) and it works like a champ.....got all the info. right here on the forum....thanks guys.....I have a picture but haven`t leaned how to post pictures yet...if someone would email me at ajniette@bellsouth.net I`ll send it and you can post it......I even got an extra bracket to set the HB in...it set like it is mounted in my boat....having this set up helps me go into all the pages...look at all the funtions and what I can`t figure out I can get all the answers I need right here on the forum.  thanks guys
