1198c - what would be the best partner?
« on: May 14, 2014, 08:43:55 PM »
Hello,

I currently own the 1198c along with two transducers...front and back of boat hooked up to the i-Pilot Link system. I have the 1/2 switch so I can switch from the front/back transducers at anytime.

What I would like to ask is....I want to add a second fish-finder to the back of the boat (my 1198c is just behind the windshield and is used by the person fishing at the front of the boat).

What would the best fish-finder to use for the back of my boat. I would like the back transducer to be displayed on this new unit as well.

How will this affect my current set-up and is there anything else I need to purchase to make this happen?

Thanks...

Hello Lapworth,
Well, first off I would buy an Ethernet DI Si unit compatible to your 1198. Something 898 series or above. This is just a matter of size and how much you want to spend. A lot of options and good prices out there right now to choose from... Second, your going to need a 5 port Ethernet switch if you want to run your Ipilot Link and share info between the 2 units. Third, you will need Ethernet cables that will run from your mounted E-switch to your units. Many lengths available. Also with the E-switch you will be able to eliminate your 1/2 switch as you will be able to select these transducers to either Ethernet unit. Keep in mind that software has a lot to do with your units working together with Ipilot Link. I hope this helps, Greg would know more specifics than I do without having to look it all up.

I think you did pretty well here Brewster.

With the 1198 unit you will have to keep to another Si model unit to share the 2D, Si and Di sonar.  That could be an 800 series (898c HD Si, 899ci HD Si), a 900 series (998c HD Si, 999ci HD Si) or an 1100 series (1198c HD Si, 1199ci HD Si) unit.  Depending on which one you get you may additionally need an AS-EC-QDE Ethernet adapter cable.

lapworth:
A brand new U.S. (ContourXD maps), version of an 1198 will be very difficult to find.
If you go the 1198 route, you may have to buy used.
