Help with 899ci HD Si
« on: April 28, 2015, 09:33:27 AM »
Hello all, my name is Joe and i am new on this site, this is a great site and very informative for newbies such as myself. I have just purchased my unit 899 si and have used it  only a handful of times . I live in downstate southern NY amd fish a bunch of reservoir systems that forbid any sort of motor, just rowing is allowed. I was wondering if i can get some insight on what a fish looks like on it, i keep looking for that bright white streak but cant seem to see it and I know there around. I have the contrast at med/high, with sensitivity around10-12 and screw with brightness time to time. What is the best way to start recognizing these fish? maybe use 2d sonar and spot an arch then flip to SI big screen and see if I see a white streak perhaps? I took a few snapshots that i think are fish but its hard for me to tell at this stage. If anyone can guide me on what they see on these shots would be greatly appreciated

Welcome to the Humminbird Side imaging Forums KJ.

It would help us if you posted Screen Snapshots from the unit itself and not a picture of the display.  The images would be clearer which would make it easier for use to spot any fish.  The second picture you posted definitely had some fish in the water column on the left towards the top of the screen.  The other two pictures may have some fish in them but they do not appear clear enough for me to be confident of that.

Not sure but I would think that you can do this from an apple laptop as all you will be doing is looking at a *.png picture file and posting it to this web site like you did the other images.

On your 899 unit; install a memory card in one of the reader slots, press the MENU button twice to get to the main menu system and scroll over to the Accessories tab, scroll down this tab until you see the Screen Snapshots menu and set it to “On”.  To make the Screen Snapshot just press the MARK button and the unit will set a waypoint and take a Screen Snapshot (the waypoint gets saved to the unit’s internal memory and the Screen Snapshot *.png file gets saved to the memory card).

I agree with Greg ... Screenshots from the unit are easier to interpret in the forum here than pix from a phone or camera ...

Your images do show a few fish ... With practice you will be able to start picking them out ...

Fish echoes do not usually show as "streaks" ... but show more as white dots elongated just a tad ...

Sometimes the shadow of the fish is noticed 1st ... Then the shadow leads the eyes to the white dot echo that created that shadow ...

I would suggest keeping the Contrast at about 8-10 To make the image not as "grainy" ...

Then use the SI Sensitivity setting to adjust the brightness/darkness of the image to your eye's preference ...

Have you thought about upgrading to the XHS 9 HDSI 180 T Hi-Def SI xducer to add the 800kHz capability of the 899 ... ??

Thank you for the replies gentleman, i will use this info on my next outing an adjust a few things and report back.

Rickie, I have thought about the HD transducer but heard mixed reviews and at that price im still on the fence. Maybe i need to figure this one out before i jump into that transducer image upgrade.
