Hi 1889

Thank you for this software. :)
An online interface would increase the utility value (Ethernet?) considerably.
A little more would be good of you, takes away the fear of malicious programs. :-\

I am hoping with ethernet we will  see more supported programs.

Yes indeed, freeware can be a bit cautious oriented..

So far virus has been a computer issue but have heard of cell phone apps getting hacked.

It may be a matter of time before some goofy person decides to hack our sonar/gps units..

Not as much BS as you think. Law enforcement and the Federal Government are already using GPS tracking of individuals for various reasons.
Someone might want your favorite fishing coordinates.

I totally agree with Chuck.
It would probably be to maliciously corrupt the units, not to
steal info from them.

Take a smart bored kid with nothing to do and no
good role models in their lives, and just for the heck
of it, they could see if they could mess up somebody's sonar.
They'd probably figure out how to copy something on an SD
card that would load into the unit's operating system at start up.
I'm sure there are not many safeguards built into sonars, yet.

If you think it's not coming then you are dead wrong.
Anything with an operating system will eventually be targeted.
Some people just don't have anything better to do than to
think up ways to mess up others people's sh@t.

I889, not the wrong forum, it is just a forum with a lot of members.
There is a lot of information stored on this site and information of good usefulness.
Advertising is generally not as well accepted as if the post for the ad gave reasoning behind the notice of a "new" product or software instead of a link.
Maybe we all got off on the wrong foot.
I am interested in what your software will do for the users here on this thread.

Guys...guys...guys...Let's not get side tracked here with theoretical attack vectors that do not and may never exist.    :P

l889 is working (for free I might add) on something that is really awesome. He should have been a little more clear about what it was however.  Check out this thread over on the other sight for some details.  I believe many of you will be as excited about l889's project as I am.

This is the statement by I889 that got things heated.

This isn't the wrong forum, just the wrong type of response from him.

Freeware programs are great.
I hope I889 can keep developing his software.

I agree we would like to see his product.

Glad you reposted the link as he removed it from the original post.

Guys...

I am new to Humminbird, I invested lots of money into an all Garmin system when they hit the market and it works great from fishing to hand held units for my outdoors activities.  I am also a computer programer and IT designer with over 22 years of experience.  I have tried this new "FREE" software with my unit and my lake master v2 card and it works fine (I ran my unit for 3 hours), I can even overlay data over the lake master card. Right now Gps systems are receivers only with rare and special designs for them to be transceivers.  I took a chance with my $1k unit because its no as complete as my old units.....it just has DI and SI. I must say I like the unit and now that I can do some extras I can now get the other 2 units! Thanks  l889 I will test your software anytime!  Someone else should look into this!

This is the statement by I889 that got things heated.

I suspect it was the immediate implication that the software might be malicious.  If I were I889 and just posted some software that I had just spent many hours developing and those were the first two responses, my reaction might not be too different from his.  Would their reaction been different if he was selling it for $300 instead of giving it away?  I don't know, but I think the reception I889 got to his first post was unwarranted.

Just to clarify since the beginning of this topic is missing:
I've downloaded onto the software and was very pleased I had never suspected that it was malware. :)
My request for a little more background information on his personal advancement, the fact that 1889 had suggested in another forum to let him get attention (eg beer) folded in the software. Just what?
His response was, unfortunately, very childish. :-\

I think it might have been a misunderstanding and rush to judgment on the part of all parties here.  Sometimes it's hard to fully communicate in a couple sentences on a forum what we mean to say.  I'm as guilty of that as anyone.  I read the posts a couple times myself and I can see both sides.  I've chatted offline with I889 and he seems like a nice chap and his contribution is very generous.  Hopefully we all can step beyond this small miscommunication and continue to help each other as before.  :)

I889 is a genius and the guys that are complaining are just jealous cause they havent the knowledge to achieve what he has in a short time.
You guys should be ashamed of yourself because i bet you are using the software now and dont have the balls to appologize and beg him to join the site and share with us!!1
