Title: Confused about transducers...
Post by: dkuster on May 01, 2012, 07:07:05 PM

Hi Everyone,

I'm looking at purchasing an 898 and I need a little clarification on transducers.

I already have a Minn Kota trolling motor with built-in US2 dual beam transducer.

If I buy an 898 the transom mount transducer it comes with has both 83/200 (dual beam) and DI/SI capabilities.

So the question is, should I just install the "all-in-one" transducer on the transom, or is there some advantage to also purchasing the Y-cable and pulling the traditional sonar from the Minn Kota and the DI/SI from the 898 transducer?

(I've read that the all-in-one transducer can be difficult to set up.  Does using the Y-cable make this easier?)

Thanks for the help!

I don't think you would have any benefit in trying to use the US2 in your trolling motor.

The people who use the Y-cable and a separate 2D transducer are doing that to get better high speed 2D depth readings.  Many of the bass boats have the SI transducer mounted where it will actually be out of the water when on plane, or have so much water turbulence that sonar readings are impossible....therefore the need for another 2D transducer.  It is usually a "shoot thru the hull" type transducer on fiberglass bass boats.

Ah, that makes sense.  Thanks for clearing that up!   ;)

Bob B is certainly correct but I would also add that if you installed the HDSi transducer that comes with the 898 unit on the transom and use the US2 transducer in the trolling motor that the Si/Di data would be XX feet (fill in the length of your boat) off from the 2D sonar data you would be seeing.  Also you would not have a water depth reading unless the trolling motor was in the water.  [I am assuming a bow mounted trolling motor here.]
