Onix 10 si touch - hardware & software revisions?
« on: July 20, 2016, 11:39:57 AM »
over the past several years i've progressed through the core hb units (597ci, 798csi, 998csi, 1198csi), and i recently got into the helix 12si this year.
the increased processor speed of the helix 12 is certainly noticeable (which is a good thing).

however, i'm finally thinking about making the jump to onix (for increased screen customization and map sharing between multiple onix units).
one of the reasons i've stuck with hb is the level of customer support and software updates.
the onix units have been on the market since 2014.

as i shop around and look at both used and new onix 10 units, on the outside they all "look" the same.
but i'm curious if there are any internal changes to the hardware (processor speed and ram memory for example) or major software OS changes (beyond the download-able software updates) through the years.

for example:
new units have the "cross touch" logo printed on the SD card door, but older units do not.
(excluding the NT "no touch" units, as i'm not interested in that model.  i want the touch screen feature.)
are the older 2014-2015 units still capable of this "cross touch" multi finger gesture feature?

i'd like to think that an older 2014 unit could be updated to the same specs as a new 2016 unit (with a simple software update, downloaded from the myhumminbird website).  but i'm not sure.

perhaps someone who is familiar with the onix product line could help answer these questions (maybe greg or ricky).

I have not read (nor heard) of any hardware changes in the ONIX line since its inception ...

There have been a few software updates ... The 1st units started with 2.000 ...

Then 2.300, a 2.310 patch, 2.700, a 2.7xx patch (that didn't change the software version number) ...

There have been several bugs addressed thru the versions, some bugs still reside, and some feature additions with the updates (CHIRP mainly) ...

The advantages to ONIX over core units are mainly customization, dedicated DI and SI in the same unit, map sharing, more control of transmitters, and Cross Touch ...

Better imaging is subjective depending on who you you talk to ...

thanks for the response rickie.

cabela's has both the onix 10si and 8si on sale now ($1499 and $999 respectively).

the unusually large discount strikes me as odd.  almost as if they are trying to unload them in anticipation of a new model coming out?
similar to the sale prices on legacy core units, since the new helix models have taken center stage.

if my suspicions are unfounded, that is a heck of a discount on onix.
