Title: 598ci Navigation Grid
Post by: Swann on April 26, 2022, 12:44:39 PM
So, I'm fooling around w/Navigation & Waypoints, etc & it turns out i can Post a Grid about a given Waypoint or perhaps even a Set of Waypoints. My Unit being a 598ci does have NMEA0183 Ouput BUT unlike the 798ci it has No Ethernet - which 2me means No Communication w/other Units But IF I can Post a Grid, coupled w/NMEA0183 Output - would this not imply I can make a Trolling Motor follow a Grid? And IF So, what "communication" feature(s) would the given Trolling Motor need IF I were 2continue down this path? Sandro.

The grid overlay is a mapping feature designed for “Search and Rescue” use or for shipwreck searching  ...

Trolling motor “follow” control from the Humminbird is limited to  ...

Follow a pre-recorded route or track  ...
Follow a contour when using a LakeMaster mapping card  ...

(Follow a grid pattern would be cool tho)  ...

Thanks Rickie, Ur the best. Just trying 2wrap my head around having the ability 2 output NMEA0183 & yet Not Really be able 2do anything with it seeing as I dont have Ethernet? Not 2mention that wouldnt it be easier 2 follow a square grid derived from a Single Waypoint vs a Gazillion points that create a "Spline" or combination or Arcs that compose the contour lines under a given body of water? Sandro.

I guess that might be dependent on what one is trying to accomplish  ...

Following a grid is a tool that entails covering water without missing gaps between boat passes  ...

Following a contour is more attuned to a fishing pattern method where a target species might relate to a “certain” contour depth  ...

Yes, I understand what your saying in that there are visual cues that can be of some assistance BUT what's the point of even having features like NMEA0183 Output, Continuous Navigation Modes, SI Navigation Modes on a " 598 CI HD SI " IF you have No Hope of using them when lacking Ethernet Capability? Are these features just there for H_B.com to upsell the "Hopeful Fisherman" at higher price by at least being able 2 do some form of feature comparisons with a 798ciHDsi or greater? I've been using visual triangulation cues for years by way of "this buoy marker and that dock over there and that Flagpole" in order 2maintain a given set of references on the water BUT in order 2 apply an "Automated Technique" as a method of assistance are the features aforementioned Not Rendered "useless" without an Ethernet Connection? Now if my conclusion is wrong - where exactly would I able 2 apply "automated assistance on the water" with a 598ciHDSI other than the Storm Water Management Pond of a Newly built Sub-Division? LMAO :)))))))

“Continuous Navigation” mode and “SI Navigation” mode are features used in the GOTO function of the core SI units  ...

Very Thorough my friend & although I do have a manual, H-B Service should have U as their top consultant - LoL ! BTW I picked up a 2nd hand XNT9 HDSI 180T last nite after work & was hopeing 2get a chance 2do some comparisons w/the XNT9 SI 180T that came w/my 598ci BUT the question is: How would I be able 2do an S.I. comparison "simultaneously" where I might have 1 scanning Left Side & the other reading Right Side? Or is the best I can do is have them on each side of the motor & switch plugs. I did manage 2 negotiate an SI DB Y-Cable in2 the deal But I would still be "swapping plugs" in that scenario as well? Any ideas? Thanks

Ok, No Need 2answer that question as I just learned from browsing the web that I would need an SI LR Y-Cable 2accomplish that last question. Cheers ;)

You are correct my friend  ... and your older core unit can use the newer M 9 SILR Y cable or the older AS SILR Y cable  ...

4all I know, it might even be M-capable if therez a way 2tell by looking at the Pins - dunno? So is the main purpose behind using the SI-DB style splitter cable so that 1 can mount something like an In-Hull type XNT9 20 just so that 1 can achieve 2D Readings (83/200khz) at much faster speeds & then once U think U found something of interest, U Slow Right Down & start looking 2 Ur D.I. & S.I. or would there be any other "gained efficiency" by separating/isolating the signal(s) about 2 Transducers? Does it help at all w/picture quality or perhaps allow one 2do 9-10mph vs 4-6mph when applying D.I & S.I or is that just where the buck stops & "Thatz All Folks"? Sandro.

Correct  ... the benefit of a separate 2d xducer using the AS SIDBY Cable is simply because the SI xducers are challenging to get satisfactory high speed depth readings  ...
