Change transducer to HDSI version on 899 SI?
« on: May 21, 2014, 07:27:20 PM »
First of all, this seems like a great site to learn how to use this expensive equipment. I am completely new to SI and trying to wrap my head around the sideways images.
I have a 788 DI to mount at the bow & a 899 SI for the console. Since I can still exchange transducers, what would be the advantage of getting the HDSI version that can use the 800 HTZ? The exchange is around $85.00.
Is it practical to consider a Quadrabeam transducer also using a TS3 switch? This appears to be somewhat  easier to read.

I would never bother with the quadra - SI blows it away on all fronts.
There is a S/W issue HB is working on for 800KHz "wash out" on the 2014 models.
I have the upgraded HDSI, and when they fix the software (no know target release date) I will be using the 800 KHz.
The 455 has a larger area of coverage - but doesn't have the finer definition to show quite as small of details 800 can. If you can swing the coin - even your 455 KHz image will be crisper due to the larger crystals in the HDSI XDCR.

Hope this helps,
Robert

Hi Robert,
Thanks for taking the time to reply. I feel I have so much to learn to understand what I am seeing on SI. I think I won't make any more variables since I have not even updated or set up the units as yet and will stay with the CSI that came with the 899. Since there is a S/W problem, changing the transducer might cause more confusion if I would happen to have a problem with my new unit. I'm hoping to get everything mounted this long weekend so I can play with it. I'm setting up my boat this year so if I can retire next year I will be ready!
Thanks again for your advice,
