Problems with 798ci si non HD
« on: August 29, 2015, 11:18:13 PM »
I bought this model used in January.  Everything seemed fine until I went to deeper lakes.  My fishfinder wont read depth after anything deeper then 50'.  The depth number just blinks, showing the last depth reading it got usually around 50'.  It doesnt matter if I select universal 2, quad beam, or the third option that enables SI (can't remember the name.)

Ive recently tried using this fishfinder to visualize my jig.  I can see my jig well in 20' or less water when the jig is DIRECTLY under the transducer,  but if its more then 4' away I cant see it.  I was told that using the 83khz option only would give me the best image, but I can only visualize it with the both 83khz and 200khz turned on.  83khz sensitivity set at ten, swithfire max mode set on high, and surface clutter set on high.

Ive been given advice on what to settings to use to visualize my jig, but my fish finder seems to want the opposite settings, specifically with the frequency and surface clutter settings.

I upgraded the firmware to the most recent update in February.

What is going on here?  Is it a hardware problem with my sonar, or a software issue?  Ive pretty much tried all available combinations as far as settings go, still dont get a depth reading below 50'...

Let's first determine if we are having a hardware issue ...

Is the unit using only the stock XNT 9 SI 180 T ... Or is there also a "Dual Beam" xducer connected with the AS SIDB Y cable ...?? (Please verify what xducer is connected by finding the xducer model number printed on the xducer cable about 1ft from the connector end) ...

Did this issue just recently start ...or happen ever since you've had the unit ... ??

Is there another sonar unit running at the same time ... ??

Im only using the stock transducer that came with the fishfinder.   Not using any other fishfinder.

I honestly think its the transducer.   There's a small nick in the cable.  Id like to troubleshoot other possibilities before I buy a new transducer for $200+...
