Title: ION SERIES
Post by: ksc on November 02, 2013, 06:39:42 AM
HI ALL

I have been looking forward to see these new models. So finally they are here. But there is only one skill that will interested in me most! That is the side imaging. I want to know if there is an improvement about depth of SI? My 998 can not view under 50 meters depth. new ion can do more?

Hi,
Very inspiring and exhilarating news from HB! Too bad the Humminbird website people didn't finnish the info on the new units before this weekend. Specifications are missing on all but one units so we will probably have to handle our curiosity and frustration until next week.

In the mean time I'm digesting questions as: are also the SI channels chirped, has HB solved the recording gap issue, will the 3:rd party recording viewers work, any news on new SI transducers, what about DrDepth - is it revived and integrated/adapted in some way, etc.?

Chirp is not so critical for sideimaging because horizontal resolution is always much worse than range resolution (which is improved with chirp). Chirp will have some effect on depth resolution in the downward channels. Sideimaging can (almost) only be enhanced in a meaningful way with longer transducers. If there is no new SI transducer coming I don't think HB has done anything to the SI capacity since that wouldn't have any practical effect.

Speculations with regards,
Rickard

Sorry guys but I’m not sure what I can say about the new units right now – and that is if I even know an answer to your questions, which reading Rickard’s questions I don’t.  I’m on holiday for this next week (youngest Son came home from being gone for two years!) so I won’t get any answer for over a week.  The web site should be updated by then.

50 m deep can work.
By information can see on net, it shoud be 100m deep and 160m each side. Just to wait for more official information (base on a GEONAV side scan)
