Topic: 997C si and Ray49 VHF

Hi all and Merry Christmas.

I received the Raymarine Ray49 VHF radio for a Christmas present.

I have an Humminbird 997Csi installed on my boat and it works great.

Without slogging through a ton of googles, manuals and reading could someone outline briefly what I need to do to connect the two together and what it will and wont do once I get them connected.

I guess I am making an assumption that they can be connected. Looking at the back of the radio there is a cable labeled "NEMA", does this connect to my 997 somehow?

Does the Ray49 VHF radio need the humminbird's GPS to provide VHF radio position?

Sorry for all the dumb questions, I am really not up to speed with the VHF radio stuff at all, (I live in Montana) so it's not like we are going off-shore with this boat. I use it mostly on a large reservoir in Montana called Fort Peck.

Another question, who, on your lake will be monitoring the distress frequency and what are their capabilities for a received signal. Just wondering as most of the use I see is coastal or intercoastal routes.

Hi Chuck, thanks for the reply. To tell you the truth, I have know idea if there even is a distress frequency monitored in that area, the closest town is Jordan MT, but where I am going to be is mostly west of there 20-30 miles. I think there is NOAA weather info transmitted I should be able to receive, and will be able to talk with other boats in the area. I really got it for an extra safety precaution, the area is very large, very remote and there is almost no cell phone coverage.

Maybe its not worth the time to hook up considering the location I will be using the radio??

Red, Every little bit helps! WX for sure. Coast Guard, Boat US, Seatow maybe. 7 to 10mi yes. 20 to 30 at mi sea/water level good luck. Roddy

For the GPS signal you most use the pigtail from the GPS receivercable, the NEMA  out dose not work for this.

You will need to register your system with BoatUS or the Coast Guard and get a MMSI# so they will know who the signal belongs to.
The way this works is you transmit a signal to a satelite who then sends the signal to Virginia who then attempt to locate the registered user and determine what the need is.
There may be others who can receive the signal but not sure of the total network.
I would go ahead and hook up and register since you are in a remote area. Satelite should be great for you.
Most radios rely on an external gps signal so I see that is available on the gps out port of your unit.
I saw somewhere that Shakespear radios are building in gps with some of their models.

You will need to use the NMEA Pigtail connection from the GPS Receiver’s second shorter cable that comes out of the connector for the GPS Receiver.  Depending on when the GPS Receiver you have was built you will need to use the Black wire (GPS signal ground) and either the Green wire (NMEA +) – if it has it - or the White wire (also NMEA +).  If you use the White wire than you also will have to set the NMEA Output menu in your 997 unit to the “On” setting.

From the information you e-mailed me it looks like you will want to connect the Raymarine Purple wire to the Humminbird Black wire.  Than connect the Raymarine Gray wire to the Humminbird Green wire (or the White wire if your GPS Receiver does not have a green wire).
