No 2D.....No Depth
« on: March 27, 2010, 10:06:58 AM »
I guess i may be the only person that is not satisfied with their 997. I have installed two "other" fish locators with no problem what so ever. My 997 came with 4.750 installed on the unit. My GPS works, water temp seems to be working and i am getting some side imaging. I have NO 2D or Depth. The first time i used the unit the transducer was installed on the back of my boat, in the water, with all of the above conditions. I'm sitting in a marina in 10' of water, according to my $15.00 Lowrance i have mounted on my trolling motor. I called Humminbird and we troubleshot the unit while the boat was in the water. We went through every menu on the unit with absolutely no change. NO 2D and the unit has no idea how deep the water is. They decided it was a faulty transducer.  They shipped out a new one. Yesterday, i mounted the transducer to piece of PVC tubing.  I backed the boat into the water. Stuck the transducer in the water and turned the unit on with the EXACT same results. Called Humminbird again and they can't believe what they are hearing. The unit knows there is a transducer hooked to it, powered the unit up with it unplugged and it said no transducer installed. Some form of Side Imaging is working. As soon as I put the transducer in the water it starts to scroll across the screen. Pull it out the screen goes black. Move it up and down and the edges of the side image hem stitch, so the trasducer is doing something.  Two different transducers just can’t seem to find the bottom. No matter where I am it auto ranges from 0 to 1200 feet and shows a depth somewhere in that range.  I am at my wits end and I am really starting to miss my 10” Lcx that worked flawlessly.  >:(

I am assuming that you are only using the standard HDSi transducer here: it sounds like you have narrowed the problem down to being in the unit itself.  Call the 1-800-633-1468 number and talk to the Humminbird folks about getting your 997 unit fixed.

Greg,

Could he roll the unit back to a software version prior to 4.750 then try to reinstall it?  Not sure if this was possible.  But if its a software issue, could reolve it.

Greg, I thought of moving back with the software and then reinstalling 4.750. I decided against that. I have written Humminbird a letter about replacing my unit with a brand new 997c. I will see how that goes before i make any wholesale changes myself.
Thanks for your reply,
Eric

No need to write a letter.  Its under warranty.  Just call in to Humminbird.  Give them a credit card to pay for a brand new unit shipped out and when they recieve yours back they will refund the amount to your card.

Or you can have them send you a return label to ship yours back for free adn they will repair or replace.

It is worth a try on the software side if it can be done.  Its a simple fix (if it works).

Good luck,

Robert

Assuming proper install, any $1500 unit (mfg cost < $15) should perform as advertised. On delivery, and for the life of the unit. It should work out of the box, and not require fiddling, fudging, or f*cking with.

Not so in America today... and this is the primary reason American mfg is in the toilet.

I have an old Matrix 37 unit that has done all she presumed to do from the start till now. Less than one fifth the cost and fully fuctionable. Not near as sexy, but as can be clearly seen - she delivers...

Maybe I did not say it so well, but that is precisely my point.

I do not want to see HBird go further down the road to being another great brand name compromised.

There’s nothing to take forward from his post Chuck.  Our numbers show that we have been steadily improving the quality of our products – but this does not mean that we still cannot have some that will not work out of the box – as is the same for any electronics manufacturer.  In fact we have much better quality in our products now than when we made the Matrix 37 unit.  As you and Robert saw here we track the quality at every step of the process including after production as we also look at the numbers and types of phone calls that we get as well as what comes through our Service Center.  As far as useless innovation is concerned I know of several features that had been proposed and dropped since they were not considered usable by most fishermen.  We have added features and functions at our Customer’s requests.  I’m not going to respond to his racial comment.

Now, back to trying to help Eric:
I would call and not send a written letter.  Not sure who you sent it to or who here responds to these but this is a very busy time of year for us and a phone call would get far faster results.  I am sorry that you have had problems with your unit but at this point I think that you have pinpointed the problem and that it is in the unit itself.  Please call the 1-800-633-1468 number and speak with someone so we can get you out and fishing with a fully operational 997 unit.
