898c wont turn on....power button issue??
« on: June 08, 2012, 04:58:28 PM »
I was on the lake yesterday and my unit just shut down and would not start up. I checked votage coming to the unit and it was 12.3. I even hooked it  up directly to a seperate fully charged battery and still nothing.

Could this be the power button issue i have been reading about??

I have already sent it back to hb for service....i just bought it in march.

I was just wondering if this has happened to anyone else.

I did download the latest update and since then it would shut down whenever i pushed buttons too quickly but it would always start back up.

I had my power comming into a fuse pannel with an additional inline fuse.

Thanks for your help.....Joe

It might be that you downloaded and installed the wrong software.  Did you download the software as soon as it was posted on the Humminbird Site? If so you should know that they updated that software about a week after it was first posted.  I did the same thing as I was anxious to see the new featurers etc.   But I had to redownload the old software and install that. Then I went to the Humminbird Web site and found the new software's new good program and downloaded that and installed it.

Somehow they managed to put some faulty software out for the new 898 unit for a short period of time.    My unit was powering off by itself when I pushed buttons and the installation of the newer verions of the software *firmware* fixed the problem.

The only other thing I can think of that would cause that problem is the connection where the power cord plugs into the  back of the control head.  Some times the pin connectors don't make good contact and you have to close up the () that the pins goes into with some needle nose plyers. I've had to do that a few times on my old Humminbird LCR 8000 units' power plug.  I just used the plyers to squeed the holes closer together which make the pin fit tighter and make their connection better.

Moose and JS....instead of squeezing the female plug try "SLIGHTLY" bend the male plug.

Good point.  As squeezing the plastic is a last resort for a older 1986 unit that I was despirate to keep working.  Bending the pin slightly would work as well.

I did try to rotate/push/turn the plug while i was plugging in but still nothing.

Does this sound like the power button issue others are having or something else?

Maybe. Those buttons are not going to last forever. I personally don't like them.  But they are cheaper than the best on off buttons.

I had a bad button on my laser pointer.  It was clicking but not turning off the light .  So I had to cut the light off the thing and put liquid Tape over the ends of the two wires.  The laser point had a bendable LED light and a red lazer beam. The laser beam still works fine.  I just spent about 10 bucks on three new LR44 Batteries to get the thing to work again.  But the darn internal switch on the circuit board had two different on/off toggle type buttons.  One turned the red laser beam on and off and the other button turned the light on and off.

I've had other devices that used the same type of on off switch that the Humminbird unit's use. One is a timer on my Schwinn AirDyne Excercise Bike. I took that thing apart and cleaned the plastic and the soldered circuits on the mylar sheet to make it work again. It's about 30 years old now but still works after I took it apart and cleaned it.  But I'd recommend that you send the unit back to Humminbird and let them repair or replace it if it's still under warranty. And even if it's out of warranty they could fix it for a fee.

I would double-check the fuse and the power connections.

Have you put a voltage meter on the power cord which goes into the back of the Humminbird?

I did hook up the voltmeter to the power cord and it read 12.3 or so volts. I replaced/ checked the fuses serveral times. Humminbird already has shipped it back but no word on what the problem was.

Just got word from HB.....it was a bad power circuit board. If anyone is having trouble with there unit turning off and restarting then you might be looking at the same problem.
