Problems whit temperature readings
« on: October 27, 2010, 02:49:16 PM »
Hi folks. Got a problem whit my 798.  One example: The water temperature is 5 degrees Celsius. When I start my humminbird it shows the temperature as 10 degrees. Slowly it goes down in few minutes to 6-7 degrees where it stops. After this the temperature readings do not  rise or fall anymore, unless the water temperature do not change off course.

Where is the problem? In transducer, cable, software or??

Shame to say It loud, but I did hit a rock, so I had to non to blame but my self for that. The transducer did take the hit, but I was surprised that it was still in one piece and god health?  The sonar and sidescan seems to work perfect!

Before the hit, I did have a problem whit the screen. Functions did disappear, and there came some errormessages I didn't have time to reed.
I turned it off, put the settings back to "standard" and  then put the settings back to advance, and back to where they was before. After that everything seems to work well.

Just wondering :(

Usually if there is a temperature problem Kimi, it is in the temperature sensor that is built into the transducer.  Only way to know for sure though is to connect another Humminbird transducer that has the built-in temperature to your unit and test it in the same cold water.  Just be aware that there is a temperature offset menu to help calibrate it to a known accurate temperature reading source.

Thanks Gregg!

So its seems that it was the hit whit the rock that has made some damages on the sensor? Maybe some water came in and is in contact whit the chords?

Anyway the winter is coming, and the boat is on dry land now over the winter, so there is a chance that sensor dry up, and maybe one can put some glue or something to preventing water to come in contact whit the sensor??

If that is what happened Kimi, you may be able to fix it that way.

The winter is finally over and I got my boat in water!

I opened a little bit up the plastic shield on the transducer, and let it dry for a few months. Just in case if there would be some water inside. Then I filled the gap with epoxy. After using the transducer in water for hours, it seems now to working fine again!

So, the hit with the rock last October did after all allow some water to penetrate the transducer and it came in contact with the temperature reader.

But this is a problem that can be fixed!

Kimi..., ;)
