Hi Guys,
Just joined this wonderful forum, it is definitely unique in that it is most probably the best source of Humminbird info on the planet, both beginner, like me and reading through
many forums here, a lot of advanced discussions as well
Thank you for letting me join, as always, I'll most probably be the new guy with all the questions for a while

I live south of the equator, in Australia, have a small 16ft plate alloy boat, mainly lure and fly fish both salt and freshwater,
hope to go on an extended trip next year including our far north east coast and fish our numerous lakes

Started out with a Humminbird 358ci but now have a Humminbird 798ci HD Side Imaging

Came across this web site doing hundreds of searches when trying find out if I need to purchase a Quad Beam 455kHz transducer,

Regards,
Gary
Read somewhere here, lost it now, but indicated the Australian version of the 798 had a special transducer with 455kHz but not sure about that?

Welcome to the Humminbird Side Imaging Forums Gary.

I don’t think that we (Humminbird) packaged any of the 798 unit with a special transducer.  There are some that exchanged or purchased the HDSi (XHS-9-HDSi-180-T) transducer for use with their 798 unit for the better detail in the 455kHz Si sonar though. That may be what you are meaning.

Welcome Fly ...

We like questions ... And pix from your HB experiences...

Pick up a SD Card  ...and keep it handy with your unit for screenshot captures...

Hi Greg
I rang the retailer and asked him about the 455kHz transducer and he said that is what I have?
I'm guessing the unit, with the supplied transducer will still do 455kHz but the quad beam will do it better?

Tks Ricky,
Have the SD card ready to go,
Have to also do some computer work to get things up and running, I have a Mac and am getting Windows, (and Parallels),  just to
do the PC stuff, not just the Humminbird but also my 4x4 GPS, and mapping software

What Greg means is that the "upgrade" imaging xducer (XHS 9 HDSI 180 T) ... Also does 455kHz like your stock XNT 9 SI 180 T xducer ...

But the XHS 9 HDSI 180 T will have better 455kHz images because the piezoes are physically longer making thinner SI pulses to obtain more detail in each ping...

The "upgrade" xducer (XHS 9 HDSI 180 T) will not allow your 798 to add the 800kHz frequency feature because your 798 does not have the capability to transmit the 800kHz frequency ...
----------------
----------------

Your 798 can also use the Quadrabeam xducer ... But it's a different technology ... Rendering different type views than the imaging xducers (XHS 9 HDSI 180 T or XNT 9 SI 189 T)...

This is a imaging view ...

This is Quadrabeam ...

Hi Rickie,
Thank you, I now get the picture, (no pun intended!  ;))
So, I should be alright with my standard transducer and get my side imaging working OK,
Will try out the sounder as standard and see how it works
The way the manual reads, appears that you need the quad beam for side imaging,
Perhaps it need a re-write in this area

I agree ...the manuals could use some rewording...
------------

Meanwhile....Your stock xducer (XNT 9 SI 180 T) will work fine for 2d/DI/SI ...

Your only benefit in the "upgrade" XHS 9 HDSI 180 T imaging xducer would be somewhat sharper Di/SI images...some guys see the sharper difference in the smaller 5" screen - some don't ...

There is really no extra benefit in the Quadrabeam xducer ...because your stock imaging xducer (XNT 9 SI 180 T) covers more area and gives picture-like detail images instead of the "cartoon-like" Quadrabeam images...

The 2d images will be the same in either xducer...

Much appreciated!
Thank you, I was starting to get a bit worried, although new, it was the last of the old stock,
bought it from the HB agents at the boat show for about 1/2 price, being the last one

My old unit, (385ci), was not updating quick enough when going to my fishing waypoints,
The new 798ciHD SI has solved that problem, now I'm not "over shooting " the waypoint

Taking off on the 19th, (hoping the weather is OK),
Planning to try out the side imaging this time and hopefully get a recording to show here

FWIW, got the 798ci HD SI at our last boat show,
Cost me $11 entrance fee but cost me about $3000 to get out!  ;D
Bought the sounder and a Minn Kota iPilot as well

Thanks again for all your help,
..........Gary
