I have a 898c si and reading some post here it seems that the last number has something to do with how other units work with it. I was looking at a 999c si my friend has for sale but I am wondering if the 998c si would work better. So I would have 898 and 998 both with the 8 on the end. Does this matter? thanks

The xx8 series units were 2012-2013 models ...
The xx9 series units were 2014-2015 models ...
Your 898 will work with either ... But the xx9 series have more sharing possibilities ...

But that really gets back to what you are wanting to share between units. Mostly it is a difference in what sonar can be shared with the xx9 series units having more possibilities. Staying with two SI model units from either/both the xx8 and xx9 model units though you will be able to share the 2D and Si sonar back and forth.
