Has anyone dropped their 798 in the water
« on: June 12, 2010, 07:01:47 PM »
:( I think I may have lost my unit while putting in.   :'(   I was wondering how far it might have moved and whether there would be any point in trying to salvage it.

It should float and is supposed to be waterproof to 1 meter I think!  Yes, definitely worth looking for it!

Thanks, I will scour the shorelines.  Fortunately, it's only about 600 acres and doesn't get a lot of traffic.

Somehow, I was hoping for a response a little more useful than this:

Thank you for contacting Humminbird Customer Service.

We will be glad to service your unit at no charge if it is less than one year
from the date of purchase and you can provide us with a copy of your receipt,
a canceled check or credit card statement showing the purchase date of your
unit. If your unit came pre-installed on your new boat as standard equipment
then a copy of your bill of sale for the boat will be accepted.

If your unit has exceeded the one year warranty there will be a service charge
for the repair. The service charge of your model can be found on our website
by clicking on: Support/Contact Support/Service & Maintenance/Repair Fees or
by copying and pasting this link into your browser:
http://www.humminbird.com/support/FAQ.aspx?faqid=64 All service charges are in
US dollars. Physical damage is not covered under any warranties:
Manufacturer’s or Extended. If you are located in the US, the service
charge includes all parts, labor, return shipping back to you, and a
three-month warranty from the date of repair. The service charge also
includes all accessories such as your power cord, transducer, GPS receiver and
the temp-speed gauge if they are returned with the unit on the initial
service. Service turn around is five working days (does not include freight
times to or from the factory) and will be returned to you via Fed Ex Ground
(to a physical address) or US Postal Service (only if going to an APO or PO
Box). Fed Ex is our preferred carrier and can be traced after shipment so we
would prefer a physical address.

If you are located in Canada please copy and paste this link into your browser
for alternate instructions.
http://www.humminbird.com/support/FAQ.aspx?faqid=69

If you are located outside of the US or Canada, please reply to this email
with your location as well as the dealer name and country of purchase for
additional instructions.

You may pay with a money order or credit card. If paying by credit card please
include the credit card number, expiration date and security code with this
information, along with your return address and a detailed description of the
defect taped to the front of your unit. The Service Department address is:

Humminbird Attn: Service Dept. 678 Humminbird Lane Eufaula, AL 36027

We sincerely apologize for any inconvenience related to the defect of your
unit. We want you back on the water as soon as possible. Please let us know if
we can assist you further.

Good Fishing and Boating!

Did you find your unit?

What prompted the email response?  Did you email them about your lost unit?  What did the email say?

Pretty standard stuff there.

Questions or Comments: Does a 798c SI unit float or sink.  If it sinks how fast and is there any point trying to retrieve it.  I cant find mine and think I may have set it on the transom step (ski type) and backed into the water with it that way.

It seemed rather obvious to me that it wasn't really read since I don't need info on service unless I actually find it back.

Good question of how long it will float.  I would guess that test by HB should have been done but cant find any info on that. If they didn't then maybe some one with an old not working unit might test this out.  I am sure HB hase old non-repairable units.

I dont know if tech support will even have that kind of info.

If you did leave it on the step then no telling where it might be.

Does insurnace cover any thing like this.

Maybe HB should make these in bright orange or red.   ;D

reminds me of a few years ago when I had a old HB on my boat. Was cruising down the waterway wide open to get gas one morning and saw something in the water as I went by. Stopped and turned around and it was the EXACT same unit I was using....just floating down the ICW. No other boats in site. I took it home and used it as a spare ( worked great and this is salt water ) until I sold the boat. Bottom line I would not give up ..maybe you can find it. Good luck
Ted
